POWER SHARING
Power sharing arrangements can also be seen in the way political parties, pressure groups and movements control or influence those in power. In a democracy, the citizens must have freedom to choose among various contenders for power. In contemporary democracies, this takes the form of competition among different parties. Such competition ensures that power does not remain in one hand. In the long run, power is shared among different political parties that represent different ideologies and social groups. Sometimes this kind of sharing can be direct, when two or more parties form an alliance to contest elections. If their alliance is elected, they form a coalition government and thus share power. In a democracy, we find interest groups, such as those of traders, businessmen, industrialists, farmers and industrial workers. They also will have a share in governmental power, either through participation in governmental committees or bringing influence on the decision-making process.

28.1 Pressure groups and interest groups - of traders, businessmen, industrialists, farmers and industrial workers - influence the government either by participating in governmental committees or by bringing influence to bear on the decision-making process, so that policies favour their members.
28.2 Social groups benefit because, in the long run, power is shared among different political parties that represent different ideologies and social groups. Therefore no single group remains permanently excluded from power, and the interests and views of diverse groups get represented in government.
28.3 Contribution of citizens in the power sharing process :
1. Freedom of choice - In a democracy citizens must have the freedom to choose among various contenders for power. By voting, they decide which party or alliance will form the government.
2. Ensuring competition - Because citizens can change their choice at the next election, competition among parties is maintained and power does not remain in one hand.
3. Participation through groups and movements - Citizens also join pressure groups and movements which control or influence those in power, and thus they share power indirectly and continuously, not only at the time of elections.
