1. Cheap credit for irrigation: The government and the banks provide cheap agricultural credit so that farmers can construct wells, tubewells, dams and canals; with assured irrigation farmers can grow a second crop, which generates a large amount of additional employment in the villages themselves. 2. Rural infrastructure: The government invests in the construction of roads, transport facilities, storage godowns and marketing yards; this directly provides employment and also helps farmers to sell their produce, encouraging new activities like transport and trade. 3. Small-scale and agro-based industries: The government promotes dal mills, cold storages, honey collection centres and food processing units in semi-rural areas by providing cheap credit and training, so that farm produce is processed locally and jobs are created near the villages. 4. Expansion of services: Every state or region needs teachers, doctors, health workers, nurses and anganwadi workers; the government has expanded education and health services in villages, which generates employment as well as develops human capital. 5. MGNREGA 2005 (Right to Work): Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, all those who are able to work and are in need of work in rural areas are guaranteed 100 days of employment in a year by the government; if the government fails to provide employment, it has to give an unemployment allowance. Preference is given to those types of work that will help to increase production from land in future. 6. Other schemes and tourism: Promotion of regional craft industry, IT service centres and tourism in rural areas has also created new employment opportunities.
