Describe objectives and principles of environmental education.
Objectives of Environmental Education (as outlined by the Tbilisi Declaration, 1977, widely adopted globally):
- Awareness — helping individuals/groups gain awareness and sensitivity to the environment and its problems.
- Knowledge — helping them gain understanding of the environment and its associated problems.
- Attitude — helping them acquire values and concern for the environment, motivating active participation in its protection.
- Skills — helping them acquire skills for identifying and solving environmental problems.
- Participation — providing opportunity to be actively involved in working toward resolution of environmental problems.
Principles of Environmental Education:
- It should be a continuous, lifelong process, both in and outside school.
- It should adopt an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from science, geography, economics, and social studies together.
- It should examine environmental issues from local to global perspectives.
- It should focus on current and future environmental situations, not just historical facts.
- It should emphasise the value and necessity of local, national and international cooperation.
- It should relate environmental sensitivity, knowledge, and problem-solving skills at every stage.
- It should help learners discover the root causes of environmental problems, not just symptoms.
- It should use diverse learning environments and activity-based methods — direct experience is central.
Describe the concept, importance and scope of environmental education.
Concept: Environmental Education (EE) is a process that helps individuals and communities develop the awareness, knowledge, attitudes, skills, and commitment needed to understand and address the complex relationship between humans and their environment, working toward its protection and sustainable use.
Importance: it builds awareness of pressing environmental problems (pollution, deforestation, climate change); develops responsible, sustainable behaviour among citizens; supports achievement of Sustainable Development Goals; helps prevent/mitigate environmental disasters through informed action; and nurtures a generation equipped to balance development with conservation.
Scope: EE covers the study of natural environment (ecosystems, biodiversity, natural resources), the built/human environment (urbanisation, pollution), environmental problems and their management, environmental laws and policies, and sustainable development — spanning formal school curriculum, higher education, and informal/community-based education (through media, NGOs, and public awareness campaigns).
Explain the types of Environment.
- Natural Environment — everything occurring naturally, without human intervention: land (lithosphere), water (hydrosphere), air (atmosphere), and living organisms (biosphere) — the physical and biological surroundings.
- Built/Man-made Environment — human-created surroundings: buildings, roads, industries, cities, dams, and agricultural land.
- Social Environment — the network of social relationships, institutions, customs, and cultural practices within which an individual lives.
- Further, the natural environment can be sub-divided into: Physical/Abiotic Environment (non-living components — soil, water, air, climate) and Biological/Biotic Environment (living components — plants, animals, microorganisms).
- Some classifications also distinguish Micro-environment (immediate local surroundings) from Macro-environment (broader regional/global surroundings).
Understanding these types helps in analysing how human activity interacts with and impacts different aspects of the environment, and is foundational to designing appropriate conservation and management strategies.
Write an essay on Air Pollution.
Air pollution refers to the contamination of the atmosphere by harmful substances — gases, particulate matter, and biological molecules — that are introduced in quantities that damage human health, other living organisms, and the environment.
Sources: vehicular emissions, industrial smoke and gases, burning of fossil fuels, agricultural burning (stubble burning), construction dust, and household combustion (wood/coal for cooking).
Major pollutants: carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), and ground-level ozone.
Effects: respiratory and cardiovascular diseases in humans; acid rain damaging soil, water bodies, and structures; depletion of the ozone layer (from certain pollutants); global warming and climate change (from greenhouse gases); and harm to plant growth and biodiversity.
Control measures: promoting use of public transport and cleaner fuels (CNG, electric vehicles); enforcing industrial emission standards; increasing green cover (afforestation); reducing crop residue burning through alternative disposal methods; and raising public awareness of pollution's health impacts. Addressing air pollution requires coordinated action from government, industry, and individual citizens alike.
Write notes on any three of the following: (a) Deforestation (b) Soil Erosion (c) Depletion of ozone layer (d) Sound pollution.
(a) Deforestation
Deforestation is the large-scale clearing or removal of forests, mainly for agriculture, urbanisation, logging, and industrial expansion. Causes include population pressure, commercial logging, and infrastructure development. Effects include loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, disruption of the water cycle, increased greenhouse gas concentration (contributing to climate change), and displacement of forest-dependent communities and wildlife. Solutions include afforestation/reforestation, sustainable forest management, and stricter enforcement of forest protection laws.
(b) Soil Erosion
Soil erosion is the process by which the top, fertile layer of soil is worn away by wind, water, or human activity, faster than it can naturally be replenished. Causes include deforestation, overgrazing, poor agricultural practices, and construction. Effects include reduced agricultural productivity, siltation of rivers/reservoirs, and land degradation/desertification. Prevention measures include afforestation, terracing on slopes, contour ploughing, and maintaining vegetation cover.
(c) Depletion of Ozone Layer
The ozone layer in the stratosphere protects Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Its depletion is mainly caused by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other ozone-depleting substances (from refrigerants, aerosols, and industrial processes) that break down ozone molecules. Effects include increased UV radiation reaching Earth's surface, leading to higher risk of skin cancer, cataracts, and harm to marine ecosystems/crops. International action, notably the Montreal Protocol (1987), has led to a significant phase-out of CFCs.
(d) Sound Pollution
Sound (noise) pollution is the presence of excessive or disturbing sound in the environment that disrupts normal activity or causes harm. Sources include traffic, industrial machinery, loudspeakers, construction, and firecrackers. Effects include hearing loss, stress, sleep disturbance, reduced concentration and productivity, and adverse effects on wildlife behaviour. Control measures include noise barriers, regulation of permissible noise levels, promoting quieter technology, and public awareness campaigns.
Describe objectives and functions of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

- Early warning — identifying emerging environmental threats and alerting the international community.
Describe the Chipko Movement.
The Chipko Movement (1973 onward) was a grassroots environmental movement in the Himalayan region of India (present-day Uttarakhand), in which villagers, notably led by women, protected trees from being felled by commercial loggers by literally hugging (“chipko” means “to stick/hug” in Hindi) the trees to physically prevent them from being cut.
Background: it began in Chamoli district (village Reni) in response to commercial logging that was depleting forests local communities depended on for firewood, fodder, and soil/water conservation; the movement was inspired by earlier Gandhian non-violent resistance and was significantly led by figures like Sunderlal Bahuguna and Chandi Prasad Bhatt, with strong grassroots participation of local women, who were most directly affected by forest depletion (having to walk further for firewood/fodder).
Significance: it succeeded in gaining a ban on commercial felling in parts of the Himalayan forests; it highlighted the deep connection between local livelihoods and forest conservation; it became a globally recognised example of grassroots, non-violent environmental activism (a precursor to India's broader environmental movement); and it significantly raised awareness of the need for community-based forest management and sustainable resource use.

What do you mean by Formative and Summative evaluation? How do they differ from each other?
Formative Evaluation is continuous, ongoing assessment conducted during the teaching-learning process, aimed at monitoring student learning and providing regular feedback that teachers and students can use to improve teaching and learning while it is still happening. Examples: class tests, quizzes, homework, question-answer sessions, and observation of classroom activities/projects.
Summative Evaluation is assessment conducted at the end of an instructional unit, term, or course, aimed at evaluating overall student learning/achievement against a standard or set of objectives, usually resulting in a grade or score. Examples: final examinations, term-end tests, and board examinations.
How they differ:
- Purpose: Formative aims to improve learning during the process (diagnostic/improvement-focused); Summative aims to judge/certify learning at the end (evaluative/grading-focused).
- Timing: Formative occurs throughout the teaching period; Summative occurs at the end (of a unit/term/course).
- Frequency: Formative is frequent and repeated; Summative is usually a one-time, final assessment.
- Feedback use: Formative feedback is used immediately to adjust teaching methods and help struggling students; Summative results are typically used for grading, certification, or promotion decisions rather than immediate instructional adjustment.
- Stakes: Formative is generally low-stakes (for learning); Summative is generally high-stakes (for certification/progression).
- Nature: Formative is often informal and flexible; Summative is typically formal and standardised.
Both types are complementary and essential in a comprehensive evaluation system — formative evaluation improves the quality of learning along the way, while summative evaluation certifies the final level of achievement reached.
