What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

Two friends write to each other about war, peace and gratitude, after one of them visits the National War Memorial in New Delhi.

Chapter summary

  • The first letter is written from Jayanagar, Bengaluru, on 14 April, to a friend named Ananda.
  • The writer recalls their last conversation about war and the importance of peace — how India struggled for Independence from the British for many centuries, and how after Independence the country has had to fight several wars to protect its borders, territorial integrity and people.
  • This made her wonder — who were these brave Indians who sacrificed their lives so that we could live in peace? What were their names? Where did they come from? Does anyone remember anything about them?
  • She found some answers on an educational trip to New Delhi organised by her school.
  • She sets her friend a guessing game about the monument that inspired her most: construction began in April 2018 and finished in February 2019; it was envisioned and inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in February 2019; it is spread over 40 acres of land near the iconic India Gate. It is the National War Memorial.
  • Their teacher explained that even after Independence India has had to fight many wars, and the freedom and security we enjoy today exists because of the many brave men and women who have served in the Indian Armed Forces over decades.
  • Each brick of the memorial is called a tablet, and it bears the names of soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in different wars from 1947 till date — including the Indo-China conflict of 1962, the Indo-Pak Wars of 1965 and 1971, and the Kargil War of 1999.
  • There are 29,000 tablets, on which more than 26,000 names of fallen soldiers have been etched.
  • The teacher told them about the 21 bravehearts awarded the Param Vir Chakra (PVC), India's highest wartime gallantry medal, and about the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC), Kirti Chakra (KC), Vir Chakra (VrC) and Shaurya Chakra (SC).
  • Major Somnath Sharma was posthumously awarded India's first PVC in the Battle of Badgam in 1947. More PVCs followed for the India-China conflict of 1962 and the India-Pakistan War of 1965, and one was awarded for service during the UN Peace Keeping Operations in Congo.
  • In the 1971 war, the heroes awarded the PVC posthumously included Lance Naik Albert Ekka, Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal and Major Hoshiar Singh. Navy personnel including Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla were awarded the MVC.
  • The teacher read out the citation of Lance Naik Albert Ekka. During the attack on the enemy defence at Gangasagar on the eastern front, he noticed an enemy Light Machine Gun inflicting heavy casualties on his company. With complete disregard for his own safety he charged the bunker, bayoneted two enemy soldiers and silenced the gun. Though seriously wounded, he kept fighting alongside his comrades.
  • The memorial also includes the Amar Jawan Jyoti, an immortal flame kept ablaze day and night to revere the sacrifices of our soldiers, and an obelisk surrounded by four Chakras.
  • Earlier the Amar Jawan Jyoti stood under the arch of India Gate, lit in January 1972 to commemorate India's victory in the 1971 war. Later that old flame was merged with the new flame at the National War Memorial. Wreaths are placed at the obelisk as a mark of respect.

Main ideas

  • Freedom has a cost, and the memorial exists so that we never forget it.
  • Remembering individuals, not just events — the tablets carry names, so that soldiers are not just numbers.
  • Gratitude — the peace of ordinary life rests on someone else's sacrifice.
  • Peace is the goal. The letters admire the soldiers but never celebrate war itself.

My Dear Soldiers

Poem · A.P.J. Abdul Kalam पी.

The soldiers the poem addresses directly — and the ordinary lives they protect.
The soldiers the poem addresses directly — and the ordinary lives they protect.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

A short poem of thanks, spoken directly to the soldiers who guard India's borders in every season and on every kind of ground.

Chapter summary

  • The poet addresses the defenders of the borders directly, calling them the great sons of his land.
  • When everyone else is asleep, the soldiers still hold on to their duty.
  • Windy season, snowy days, or the scorching sun's sweltering rays — they are there guarding all the time, awake.
  • They tread the lonely expanses like yogis — walking vast, empty stretches with the same discipline and detachment.
  • Their duty takes them everywhere: climbing the heights, striding the valleys, defending the deserts, guarding the marshes, keeping watch over the seas and securing the air.
  • They give the prime of their youth to the nation.
  • The wind chimes of the land vibrate with their feat — even the air of the country seems to echo their bravery.
  • The poem ends in prayer: 'We pray for you brave men!! May the Lord bless you all!!'
  • A note in the textbook makes it clear: when the poet says 'great sons', he means all the soldiers serving the nation — both men and women.

On duty, and in service to the people — two sides of the same promise.

How the poem is written

  • Apostrophe — the poem opens by speaking directly to someone absent: 'Oh! Defenders of borders'.
  • Simile — the soldiers are compared to yogis: 'Treading the lonely expanses as yogis'.
  • Metaphor — 'Wind chimes of my land vibrate your feat' turns the nation's air into an instrument sounding their bravery.
  • Imagery — snow, scorching sun, heights, valleys, deserts, marshes, seas and air cover every terrain and season.
  • Repetition of 'you' and 'we' — it separates the soldiers who guard from the citizens who are protected, and joins them in gratitude.
  • Alliteration — 'season or snowy', 'scorching sun's sweltering'.
  • Free verse — no fixed rhyme scheme; the rhythm comes from the listing of places and seasons.
Defenders of borders'।
  • उपमा — सैनिकों की तुलना योगियों से: 'Treading the lonely expanses as yogis'।
  • रूपक — 'Wind chimes of my land vibrate your feat' देश की हवा को ऐसा वाद्य बना देता है जो उनकी वीरता बजाता है।
  • अनुप्रास — 'season or snowy', 'scorching sun's sweltering'।

Main ideas

  • Patriotism and sacrifice — the prime of their youth is given to the nation.
  • Dedication in every condition — the soldier's duty does not pause for weather or terrain.
  • Gratitude of ordinary citizens, expressed as prayer rather than praise.
  • The tone is admiring, respectful, grateful and prayerful — never boastful about war.

  • 'When we are all asleep / You still hold on to your deed.' Two lines that hold the whole idea — we rest because they do not.
  • The poem was written by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, scientist and eleventh President of India.

Rani Abbakka

Comic strip · the queen of Ullal

The warrior queen of Ullal, who fought the Portuguese for close to forty years.
The warrior queen of Ullal, who fought the Portuguese for close to forty years.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

A comic-strip retelling of how the queen of a small kingdom on the Karnataka coast refused to pay tribute to the Portuguese — and defeated them.

Chapter summary

  • Hiriya Abbakka, queen of Ullal — a small principality on the west coast of Karnataka — is on her deathbed. Years ago Ullal had been captured by the Portuguese and become a vassal, required to pay tribute to the colonial power.
  • Her daughter and successor, Abbakka Devi, is by her side. The dying queen laments that she lies helpless while the Portuguese rule. Abbakka tells her not to tire herself, and promises she will not rest till she has driven them out of the west coast.
  • The next day Abbakka Devi is crowned Queen of Ullal. She asks her people for whole-hearted co-operation to make Ullal stronger, secure and free. They answer, 'We are with you, Your Majesty.'
  • After the coronation she tells her husband, Veera Narasimha, the King of Bangadi, about her plans: she will stop paying tribute to the Portuguese, and will not sell them spices or cloth either.
  • He calls it a rash and dangerous decision — the Portuguese might think he is in league with her, and Bangadi may have to face their wrath. He decides he must make her change her mind.
  • Abbakka's reply is firm: 'You may be afraid of the Portuguese. But I refuse to be cowed by them.'
  • As she walks away he orders his men, 'Stop her! Seize her!' But such is the spell cast by the brave queen that not a soldier stirs — they decide to follow their brave leader.
  • Abbakka addresses a meeting of rajas, arguing that if they unite and fight they could drive the Portuguese out of their land. They call it impossible, saying they are no match, and advise her not to provoke them.
  • Their reaction only strengthens her resolve: she will fight the Portuguese alone, single-handed if need be.
  • The next day a Portuguese envoy reminds her that the annual tribute from Ullal is long overdue. She declares: 'We are a sovereign country. We don't pay tribute to Portugal. And we don't take orders from the Portuguese!' The envoy warns that she will regret her stand.
  • Abbakka orders merchant ships to be built and, in alliance with the Zamorin of Kozhikode, defies the Portuguese and establishes a hugely profitable trading relation with Arabia.
  • On their return all the ships are apprehended by the Portuguese navy. They fight bravely and all return except her commander's ship, which is captured. This deeply angers the queen: 'I will make them pay for this.'
  • She sends an envoy to Mangalore, the Portuguese base. The Portuguese reply by attacking. Standing and watching as the cannons boom across the river, she says the time to avenge her mother's defeat has come.
  • Abbakka unleashes her forces and they attack the Portuguese fort. Ribero, the Portuguese commander, escapes with his life, vowing to get help from Goa and have the last laugh.
  • When Ribero brings news of the fall of Fort Mangalore, the Portuguese Governor of Goa reacts sharply — a mere woman defeating the mighty Portuguese has made them the laughing-stock of the local rulers. They rally their forces to attack Ullal.
  • The dauntless Abbakka addresses her men: 'This shall be the decisive war. Let us fight with all our might and defeat the Portuguese once and for all.' They cry, 'Victory to Rani Abbakka!'
  • For four days the battle rages, but the forces of Ullal are enough. The Portuguese beat a hasty retreat in defeat, never to trouble Ullal again. Abbakka says, 'Mother, your dream has come true. Ullal is free!'
  • Later, Abbakka helped Venkatappa Nayak, the King of Keladi, to take the Fort of Mangalore. The Portuguese were eventually driven out of Mangalore completely by Shivappa Nayak, the greatest of the kings who ruled Keladi.

Main ideas

  • Courage against overwhelming odds — one small kingdom against a colonial empire.
  • Women's leadership. Her own husband and the neighbouring rajas hesitate; she does not.
  • Sovereignty and self-respect — 'We are a sovereign country. We don't take orders from the Portuguese.'
  • A leader earns loyalty. When ordered to seize her, not a single soldier moves.
  • India's history is full of unsung local heroes, many of them women.
