The Tunnel

Story · Ruskin Bond

The cutting through the hillside, where the railway lines disappear into the tunnel.
The cutting through the hillside, where the railway lines disappear into the tunnel.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

A boy cycles out of town to watch a steam engine roar out of a tunnel — and makes an unexpected friend.

Chapter summary

  • It is almost noon and the jungle is very still, very silent. Heat waves shimmer along the railway embankment, and the railway lines look like two straight black serpents disappearing into the tunnel in the hillside.
  • Suraj stands near the cutting waiting for the midday train — not to catch it, but simply to watch the steam engine come roaring out of the tunnel.
  • He had cycled out of the town, taken the jungle path to a small village, left the cycle there, and walked over a low scrub-covered hill down to the tunnel exit.
  • He hears the shrill whistle in the distance, then a sound like distant thunder issuing from the tunnel — the train is coming through.
  • The steam engine shoots out, snorting and puffing like some green, black and gold dragon — a beautiful monster out of Suraj's dreams. Showering sparks left and right, it roars a challenge to the jungle.
  • Suraj instinctively steps back a few paces as waves of hot steam strike his face. Even the trees seem to flinch from the noise and heat. Then the train is gone, leaving only a plume of smoke drifting lazily over the tall shisham trees.
  • The jungle is still again. Suraj turns from watching the drifting smoke and begins walking along the embankment towards the tunnel.
  • Twenty yards in, it becomes pitch dark. He has to turn and look back at the opening to reassure himself that there is still daylight outside. Ahead, the tunnel's other opening is just a small round circle of light.
  • He walks straight through, because there is nothing to do or see in the tunnel — he simply wanted to walk through it. When he comes out he thinks he sees an animal up on the hill, but it moves off very quickly.
  • Near the tunnel he meets Sunder Singh, the watchman, who has a small hut there. When Suraj asks if he owns the tunnel, the watchman says he has lent it to the Government.
  • The animal Suraj saw was a leopard — 'my leopard', says Sunder Singh. It is a leopard that minds its own business and comes to this range for a few days every month.
  • Sunder Singh explains his work. He walks the length of the tunnel. If he finds danger, he waves his lamp to warn the locomotive driver. If there is no danger, he can go and take a nap.
  • There is one train during the day and one at night — the night mail, at about nine o'clock if it isn't late. He invites Suraj to sit with him and watch it, and offers to walk him home afterwards.
  • Suraj says he will ask his parents, and asks whether it will be safe. Sunder Singh replies that it is safer in the jungle than in the town — nothing happens to him out here, but last month, when he went into town, he was almost run over by a bus.
  • The watchman yawns, places a large banana leaf over his face to keep away the flies, and is soon snoring gently. Suraj stands looking up and down the tracks, then begins walking back to the village.

Who's whoपात्र परिचय

SurajA boy from the town, fascinated by steam engines. Curious enough to walk right through a dark tunnel alone.
Sunder SinghThe tunnel watchman. Lives alone in a hut, walks the tunnel before every train, and calls the leopard 'my leopard'.
The leopardNot dangerous — 'a leopard that minds its own business'. It visits this range a few days each month.

Main ideas

  • Wonder — the train is described like a living dragon, and the tunnel like a doorway worth walking through.
  • An unlikely friendship between a boy from the town and an old watchman in the jungle.
  • Nature is not the enemy. The leopard minds its own business, and the jungle is safer than the town.
  • Quiet duty — Sunder Singh's simple, careful work keeps every train safe.

The picture to keep

  • The engine is 'some green, black and gold dragon, some beautiful monster out of Suraj's dreams'. That one line explains why he cycled all that way.
  • Sunder Singh's system: walk the tunnel → if danger, wave the lamp to warn the driver → if no danger, take a nap.

Travel

Poem · Edna St. Vincent Millay

A platform full of people going somewhere — exactly what the poem longs for.
A platform full of people going somewhere — exactly what the poem longs for.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

Three short stanzas about wanting to travel. The speaker cannot see the train, but hears and imagines it all day and all night.

Chapter summary

  • Stanza 1 — The railroad track is miles away and the day is loud with voices speaking. Yet there isn't a train that goes by all day whose whistle the speaker does not hear shrieking.
  • Stanza 2 — All night there isn't a train that goes by either, though the night is still, meant for sleep and dreaming. But she sees its cinders red on the sky and hears its engine steaming.
  • Stanza 3 — Her heart is warm with the friends she makes, and better friends she will not be knowing.
  • And yet — there isn't a train she wouldn't take, no matter where it's going. The wish to travel is stronger than everything else.

The open road and the long tunnel — the pull of somewhere else.

How the poem is written

  • Rhyme scheme — ABAB in each stanza (away / speaking / day / shrieking).
  • Imagery of sound and sight — 'whistle shrieking', 'cinders red on the sky', 'engine steaming'.
  • Repetition — 'there isn't a train' opens a line in every stanza and ties the poem together.
  • Contrast — stanza 1 is day and noise, stanza 2 is night and stillness; the longing is the same in both.
  • The turn comes in the last two lines: 'Yet there isn't a train I wouldn't take, / No matter where it's going.'
  • ध्वनि और दृश्य के बिंब — 'whistle shrieking', 'cinders red on the sky', 'engine steaming'।
Yet there isn't a train I wouldn't take, / No matter where it's going.'

Main ideas

  • Wanderlust — a restless longing to go somewhere, anywhere.
  • Imagination beats distance. The track is miles away, but she hears and sees the train anyway.
  • Contentment and restlessness can live together — she loves her friends and still wants to leave.
  • The destination does not matter. The journey itself is the attraction.

Word meanings

railroad track
the rails on which a train runsरेल की पटरी

cinders

Where the poem turns

  • The first two stanzas are about hearing and seeing a train that is miles away. Only the last two lines say what she actually wants — to get on it.
  • 'No matter where it's going' is the key phrase — the direction does not matter at all.
  • 'No matter where it's going'

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

The true story of a volleyball player who lost a leg in a train accident and then climbed the highest peak in the world.

Chapter summary

  • Arunima Sinha hails from Ambedkar Nagar, a small district in Uttar Pradesh. Her father was an army engineer and her mother worked as a health supervisor. Sports were a significant part of her family's life.
  • After completing a law degree following her post-graduation, she decided to pursue a job in the paramilitary forces, which would let her continue her passion for sports with a regular income.
  • In 2011, at the age of 24, Arunima was a national-level volleyball player. On the night of 11 April 2011 she met with a train accident.
  • The hours that followed were harrowing. She never imagined she would survive that night, but she did — miraculously, displaying an extraordinary will to live. One of her legs had to be amputated.
  • As she lay in the hospital bed she made a vow that many would deem impossible: not only to walk again with a prosthetic leg, but to scale Mount Everest.
  • She received a prosthetic leg and underwent physiotherapy. During this period, inspired by an article about Mount Everest, she resolved to conquer the highest peak in the world.
  • To pursue her ambition she completed a basic mountaineering course at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi, followed by eighteen months of rigorous training.
  • She approached Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to summit Everest, to guide her. Bachendri Pal instilled confidence in her: 'My child, you decided to climb Mount Everest in these situations with a prosthetic leg — you have conquered the Everest within you; the world will realise it later.'
  • On 21 May 2013, after 52 exhausting days, Arunima Sinha reached the summit of Mount Everest and became the first Indian female amputee to achieve the feat.
  • Standing at the top of the world she felt a surge of emotions — pride, relief, and an overwhelming sense of achievement. She displayed the Indian flag at the summit and left behind a photograph of her idol, Swami Vivekananda, whose teachings had inspired her throughout.
  • Her feat did not end with Everest. By July 2016 she had summited seven peaks across Europe, Africa, Australia, South America, North America and Asia.
  • In January 2019 she climbed the seventh peak, Mount Vinson in Antarctica, becoming the world's first female amputee to do so. Her goal to complete the Seven Summits was achieved.
  • In 2015 she was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India. She also received the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award and the National Award for Best Female Mountaineer.

Timeline of her journey

  • 11 April 2011 — the train accident; her leg is amputated.
  • Recovery — prosthetic leg, physiotherapy, and the vow to climb Everest.
  • Training — Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, then eighteen months of rigorous work under Bachendri Pal.
  • 21 May 2013 — Everest summit after 52 days.
  • 2016–2019 — the Seven Summits completed with Mount Vinson in Antarctica.

Main ideas

  • Willpower can be stronger than circumstance. The decision was made from a hospital bed.
  • Resilience — the ability to recover and keep going after a devastating loss.
  • A good mentor matters. Bachendri Pal gave her belief before she gave her training.
  • The real summit is inside. 'You have conquered the Everest within you.'
