अथवा / OR

χ² = Σ [ (O − E)² / E ] = 4.00 + 1.00 + 1.00 = 6.00

df = k − 1 = 3 − 1 = 2 (जहाँ k = श्रेणियों की संख्या)

(One-tailed Test)

(Two-tailed Test)

  • AMOS/LISREL —
  • NVivo/ATLAS.ti —

(Standard Error of Mean)

(Inferential Statistics)

(Central Limit Theorem)

State the basic assumptions underlying the techniques of 'analysis of variance'.

16 Marks
Answer

Meaning of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is a parametric statistical technique used to test whether the means of three or more groups differ significantly, by comparing the variance between groups with the variance within groups.

Basic Assumptions Underlying ANOVA

  • Normality — the scores in each group/population from which the samples are drawn should be normally distributed.
  • Homogeneity of variance (homoscedasticity) — the variances of the different groups/populations being compared should be equal (or not significantly different).
  • Independence of observations — each observation/score must be independent of every other observation; scores of one subject should not influence another's.
  • Interval or ratio scale of measurement — the dependent variable should be measured on at least an interval scale for the arithmetic mean to be meaningful.
  • Random sampling — samples should be drawn randomly from their respective populations to ensure the results can be generalised.
  • Additivity of effects — in factorial ANOVA designs, the effects of different factors are assumed to combine additively unless a specific interaction effect is being tested.
  • Absence of extreme outliers — since ANOVA is based on means and variances, extreme scores can distort the F-ratio and lead to misleading conclusions.

If these assumptions are seriously violated (e.g., markedly non-normal data or unequal variances), the researcher should consider using a non-parametric alternative such as the Kruskal-Wallis test instead of ANOVA.

OR

Describe the uses of 'Analysis of Covariance'.

Answer

Meaning of Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA)

Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) is a statistical technique that combines ANOVA and regression, used to compare group means on a dependent variable while statistically controlling for the effect of one or more concomitant variables (covariates) that are related to the dependent variable but not the main focus of the study.

Uses of Analysis of Covariance

  • Statistical control of extraneous variables — controls for the influence of a covariate (e.g., IQ, prior achievement, age) that could not be controlled through randomisation alone.
  • Adjusting for pre-existing group differences — in quasi-experimental or non-equivalent group designs, ANCOVA statistically adjusts post-test scores for differences in pre-test scores between groups, allowing fairer comparison.
  • Increasing precision and statistical power — by removing variance due to the covariate from the error term, ANCOVA reduces error variance, making the F-test more sensitive to detect true treatment effects.
  • Comparing teaching methods — commonly used in educational research to compare the effectiveness of different teaching methods while controlling for students' prior knowledge or aptitude.
  • Reducing the need for perfectly matched groups — allows meaningful comparison even when experimental and control groups are not perfectly equivalent at the outset.
  • Multivariate extensions — can be extended to control for multiple covariates simultaneously, useful in complex educational and social research designs.

ANCOVA is thus particularly valuable in educational research, where true random assignment is often difficult, and pre-existing differences between groups (such as prior achievement) need to be statistically accounted for to draw valid conclusions about treatment effects.

Describe the assumptions on which the use of non-parametric tests are based.

16 Marks
Answer

Meaning of Non-Parametric Tests

Non-parametric tests are statistical tests that do not require the data to meet strict assumptions about the population's parameters (like normal distribution), and are often called "distribution-free" tests.

Assumptions on Which Non-Parametric Tests Are Based

  • No assumption of normal distribution — unlike parametric tests, non-parametric tests do not require the population to be normally distributed, making them suitable for skewed data.
  • Suitable for nominal or ordinal data — applicable when data are categorical (nominal) or can only be ranked (ordinal), where means and standard deviations are not meaningful.
  • Independence of observations — like parametric tests, most non-parametric tests still require that observations be independent of one another.
  • Random sampling — samples should be drawn randomly from the population to allow valid generalisation.
  • Ordinal properties of data (ranking) — many non-parametric tests (e.g., Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon) assume the underlying data can be meaningfully ranked, even if actual numerical values are not used directly.
  • No assumption of homogeneity of variance — non-parametric tests generally do not require equal variances across groups, making them robust when this parametric assumption is violated.
  • Suitable for small sample sizes — non-parametric tests can be validly applied even with small samples, where the Central Limit Theorem's approximation to normality may not hold.

Because they rely on fewer and less restrictive assumptions, non-parametric tests are especially useful in educational and social research when data violate the assumptions required for parametric tests, or when working with small or ordinal-level data.

Calculate the Chi-square of the following data: 48 subjects were asked to express their opinion towards the proposition "should India withdraw from Asian Games" by marking, favourable, indifferent or unfavourable. The responses of 48 subjects are as below — Favourable: 24, Indifferent: 12, Unfavourable: 12.

Answer

Step 1: State the Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis (H0): There is no significant difference in opinion — the 48 subjects are equally distributed among the three response categories (favourable, indifferent, unfavourable).

Step 2: Set up Observed and Expected Frequencies

Since no other basis for expected proportions is given, under H0 the 48 responses are expected to be distributed equally across the 3 categories: Expected frequency (E) = 48 ÷ 3 = 16 for each category.

CategoryObserved (O)Expected (E)(O − E)(O − E)²(O − E)² / E
Favourable24168644.00
Indifferent1216−4161.00
Unfavourable1216−4161.00
Total4848——χ² = 6.00

Step 3: Apply the Chi-square Formula

χ² = Σ [ (O − E)² / E ] = 4.00 + 1.00 + 1.00 = 6.00

Step 4: Determine Degrees of Freedom

df = k − 1 = 3 − 1 = 2 (where k = number of categories)

Step 5: Compare with Table Value

  • Table value of χ² at df = 2, 0.05 level of significance = 5.99
  • Calculated χ² (6.00) > Table value (5.99)

Step 6: Conclusion

Since the calculated χ² value (6.00) exceeds the table value (5.99) at the 0.05 level with df = 2, the null hypothesis is rejected. This indicates that there is a statistically significant difference in opinion among the 48 subjects — their responses are not equally distributed across the favourable, indifferent and unfavourable categories; a significantly larger proportion favoured the proposition than expected by chance.

(Note: at the 0.01 level, the table value is 9.21, so the result would not be significant at that stricter level — the finding is significant only at 0.05.)

3

Describe the use of Mann-Whitney U-test.

16 Marks
Answer

Meaning of Mann-Whitney U-Test

The Mann-Whitney U-test is a non-parametric statistical test used to determine whether there is a significant difference between two independent groups on an ordinal or continuous (but non-normally distributed) dependent variable. It is the non-parametric alternative to the independent samples t-test.

Basis of the Test

  • The test works by ranking all scores from both groups together, then comparing the sum of ranks between the two groups.
  • It tests whether one group tends to have systematically higher or lower ranks than the other, rather than comparing means directly.

Uses of Mann-Whitney U-Test

  • Comparing two independent groups when the dependent variable is measured on an ordinal scale (e.g., rating scales, rank order) where means are not meaningful.
  • Alternative to t-test when data violate the assumption of normal distribution required for the independent samples t-test.
  • Small sample sizes — useful when sample sizes are too small to assume normality via the Central Limit Theorem.
  • Comparing attitude/opinion scores between two groups (e.g., comparing attitude toward online learning between male and female students).
  • Comparing performance of two independent groups (e.g., experimental vs. control group) when achievement scores are skewed or come from a small sample.
  • Used when data contain outliers, since it is based on ranks and is less sensitive to extreme values than the t-test.

Thus, the Mann-Whitney U-test provides a robust way to compare two independent groups when the assumptions of parametric tests (like the t-test) cannot be met.

OR

Write differences between one-tailed and two-tailed tests. Give suitable examples also.

Answer

One-Tailed Test

  • Used for a directional hypothesis, predicting that a value is specifically greater than, or specifically less than, another value.
  • The entire rejection region lies in one tail of the sampling distribution.
  • Example: "Students taught using activity-based method score significantly higher than those taught using the lecture method" — this predicts a direction (higher), so a one-tailed test is used.

Two-Tailed Test

  • Used for a non-directional hypothesis, predicting simply that two values differ, without specifying which is greater.
  • The rejection region is divided between both tails of the distribution.
  • Example: "There is a significant difference in achievement scores between students taught using the activity-based method and those taught using the lecture method" — this does not specify direction, so a two-tailed test is used.

4

Describe the use of Wilcoxon T-test in research.

16 Marks
Answer

Meaning of Wilcoxon T-Test

The Wilcoxon (signed-rank) T-test is a non-parametric statistical test used to compare two related/matched or paired samples, to assess whether their population mean ranks differ. It is the non-parametric alternative to the paired-samples t-test.

Basis of the Test

  • The test calculates the difference between each pair of related scores, ranks the absolute differences, and then compares the sum of positive and negative ranks.
  • It does not assume the differences are normally distributed, only that they can be meaningfully ranked.

Uses of Wilcoxon T-Test in Research

  • Pre-test/post-test comparison for the same group of subjects, when the difference scores are not normally distributed — e.g., comparing students' attitude scores before and after an intervention programme.
  • Matched-pairs designs — comparing two conditions where subjects are matched on relevant characteristics (e.g., matched on IQ) rather than being the same individuals.
  • Alternative to paired t-test when the assumption of normality of difference scores is violated, or when the sample size is small.
  • Analysing ordinal data collected from the same subjects under two different conditions or time points (e.g., rating scale responses before and after training).
  • Useful when working with data containing outliers, since it is based on ranked differences rather than raw score means, making it more robust to extreme values.

The Wilcoxon T-test is thus a valuable tool in educational and psychological research for analysing repeated-measures or matched designs when parametric assumptions cannot be satisfied.

What is Hypothesis? Differentiate between null and directional hypothesis with the help of suitable example.

Answer

Meaning of Hypothesis

A hypothesis is a tentative, specific and testable statement predicting the expected relationship between two or more variables, formulated on the basis of theory or prior observation, which the researcher sets out to verify empirically.

Null Hypothesis (H0)

  • States that there is no significant relationship or difference between the variables being studied.
  • It is the hypothesis actually subjected to statistical testing — the researcher either rejects or fails to reject it based on the evidence.
  • Example: "There is no significant difference in the mean achievement scores of students taught through the activity-based method and those taught through the lecture method."

Directional Hypothesis

  • A type of alternative hypothesis that specifies the expected direction of the difference or relationship between variables (greater than or less than).
  • Tested using a one-tailed statistical test.
  • Example: "Students taught through the activity-based method will score significantly higher than those taught through the lecture method."

Describe the use of computer packages in data analysis.

16 Marks
Answer

Meaning

Computer packages for data analysis refer to specialised software applications designed to organise, process, analyse and present research data efficiently using statistical and computational techniques.

Commonly Used Computer Packages

  • SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) — most widely used in educational and social science research for descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Microsoft Excel — used for data entry, basic statistical functions, sorting and charting.
  • R and Python — used for advanced statistical computing, custom analysis and data visualisation.
  • AMOS/LISREL — used for structural equation modelling and path analysis.
  • NVivo/ATLAS.ti — used for qualitative data coding and thematic analysis.

Usefulness of Computer Packages in Data Analysis

  • Speed and efficiency — perform complex calculations on large datasets within seconds, saving considerable time and effort.
  • Accuracy — eliminate manual computational errors, ensuring precise statistical results.
  • Handling large and complex data — enable analysis of large samples with multiple variables that would be impractical to compute by hand.
  • Advanced statistical procedures — make techniques like multiple regression, factor analysis, ANOVA/ANCOVA and non-parametric tests easily accessible.
  • Data visualisation — generate graphs, charts and tables that aid in interpreting and reporting results clearly.
  • Data management — allow systematic storage, cleaning, coding, editing and retrieval of research data.
  • Reproducibility — saved syntax/scripts allow analyses to be re-run and verified, supporting transparency in research.

Computer packages have thus transformed the process of data analysis in educational research, making it faster, more accurate and capable of handling sophisticated statistical procedures that would otherwise be extremely time-consuming.

OR

Write short notes on any three of the following: (a) Standard error of mean (b) Inferential statistics (c) Characteristics of Central Limit Theorem (d) Concept of Degree of Freedom (df).

Answer

(a) Standard Error of Mean

  • The standard error of the mean (SEM) is the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample mean — it estimates how much sample means would vary from the true population mean across repeated samples.
  • Formula: SEM = σ / √n (population SD divided by the square root of sample size).
  • A smaller SEM indicates the sample mean is a more precise/reliable estimate of the population mean; SEM decreases as sample size increases.
  • It is used to construct confidence intervals and to test hypotheses about population means.

(b) Inferential Statistics

  • Inferential statistics involves using data from a sample to make generalisations, predictions or inferences about the larger population from which the sample was drawn.
  • Includes techniques like hypothesis testing (t-test, ANOVA, chi-square), correlation and regression analysis, and estimation (confidence intervals).
  • Contrasted with descriptive statistics, which only summarises/describes the sample data itself without generalising beyond it.
  • Relies on probability theory to estimate the likelihood that observed sample results reflect true population characteristics.

(c) Characteristics of Central Limit Theorem

  • States that as sample size increases, the sampling distribution of the sample mean approaches a normal distribution, regardless of the shape of the original population distribution.
  • The mean of the sampling distribution equals the population mean.
  • The standard deviation of the sampling distribution (standard error) equals the population standard deviation divided by the square root of the sample size.
  • The approximation to normality improves as sample size increases (commonly, n ≥ 30 is considered sufficiently large).
  • This theorem provides the theoretical justification for using parametric tests (like t-test, ANOVA) even when the population distribution is not perfectly normal, provided the sample size is adequately large.

(d) Concept of Degree of Freedom (df)

  • Degree of freedom refers to the number of values in a calculation that are free to vary without violating any given constraints.
  • In statistics, df is typically calculated as the sample size minus the number of parameters estimated from the data (e.g., df = n − 1 for a single-sample t-test).
  • It is used to determine which specific probability distribution (e.g., which t-distribution or chi-square distribution) to use when looking up critical/table values for hypothesis testing.
  • Different statistical tests have different df formulas — e.g., for chi-square goodness-of-fit, df = k − 1 (k = number of categories); for independent t-test, df = n1 + n2 − 2.
