Guidance and Counseling-I
Define guidance? Explain different areas of guidance.
Definition of Guidance
Guidance is a continuous process of helping an individual understand themselves and their world, so that they can make wise choices, solve problems and develop to their fullest potential. As Crow and Crow define it, guidance is assistance made available by qualified persons to help an individual manage their own life activities, develop their own points of view, make their own decisions and carry their own burdens.
Different Areas of Guidance
- Educational Guidance — helps students choose subjects, courses, study habits and educational institutions suited to their aptitude and interest.
- Vocational/Career Guidance — assists individuals in choosing, preparing for, entering and progressing in an occupation matching their abilities and interests.
- Personal Guidance — helps individuals deal with personal, emotional and social adjustment problems, building healthy personality.
- Social Guidance — assists in developing social skills, healthy interpersonal relationships and adjustment to the community.
- Health Guidance — helps individuals understand and maintain physical and mental health.
- Moral/Ethical Guidance — helps develop values, character and ethical judgement.
- Leisure-time Guidance — assists in the constructive and meaningful use of free time through hobbies and recreational activities.
These areas are interrelated — a well-designed guidance programme addresses the learner holistically, rather than treating each area in isolation.
What is guidance? Discuss the need and importance of Guidance.
Meaning of Guidance
Guidance is a systematic, purposeful and continuous process of helping individuals to understand their abilities, interests and problems, and to make sound decisions in various spheres of life — educational, vocational and personal.
Need for Guidance
- Increasing complexity of educational and career choices in modern society.
- Widening range of occupations requiring specialised information for informed choice.
- Growing problems of adjustment among students — emotional, social, academic.
- Individual differences in ability, interest and aptitude require differentiated support.
- Rising incidence of stress, indiscipline and dropout necessitating supportive intervention.
Importance of Guidance
- Helps in self-understanding — enables individuals to recognise their strengths, weaknesses, interests and aptitudes.
- Facilitates wise decision-making in education and career, reducing wastage and mismatched choices.
- Prevents and resolves adjustment problems, contributing to better mental health.
- Maximises human potential and talent, benefiting both the individual and society.
- Improves academic achievement by addressing barriers to learning.
- Supports holistic development — intellectual, emotional, social and moral.
- Contributes to national development by channeling human resources into suitable, productive occupations.
Enlist types of counselling. Differentiate between Directive and Non-directive counselling.
Types of Counselling
- Directive counselling — counsellor-centred approach.
- Non-directive counselling — client-centred approach.
- Eclectic counselling — a flexible combination of directive and non-directive approaches, adapted to the client's needs.
- Based on setting: individual counselling and group counselling.
- Based on purpose: educational, vocational and personal counselling.
Difference between Directive and Non-Directive Counselling
- Role of counsellor — in directive counselling, the counsellor plays an active role, diagnosing the problem and suggesting solutions; in non-directive counselling, the counsellor plays a facilitative, passive role, allowing the client to lead.
- Role of client — in directive counselling, the client is a relatively passive recipient of advice; in non-directive counselling, the client actively explores their own feelings and arrives at their own solutions.
- Focus — directive counselling focuses on the problem and its solution; non-directive counselling (Carl Rogers' client-centred approach) focuses on the person and their capacity for self-growth.
- Techniques — directive counselling uses advice, persuasion, information-giving; non-directive counselling uses active listening, reflection of feelings, empathy and unconditional positive regard.
- Responsibility for decision — in directive counselling, the counsellor largely decides the course of action; in non-directive counselling, the client is responsible for their own decisions.
- Time — directive counselling is usually quicker; non-directive counselling tends to take longer as it relies on gradual self-exploration.
In practice, many counsellors adopt an eclectic approach, combining elements of both depending on the nature of the client's problem.
Describe Maslow's theory of self actualization.
Maslow's Theory of Self-Actualisation
Self-actualisation, the highest level in Maslow's hierarchy of needs, refers to the realisation of one's full potential — becoming everything one is capable of becoming — achieved only after lower-order needs (physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem) are reasonably satisfied.
Characteristics of Self-Actualised Persons
- Realistic, accurate perception of reality and comfortable acceptance of self, others and the world.
- Spontaneity, naturalness and simplicity in thought and behaviour.
- Problem-centred rather than self-centred, often devoted to a mission or cause beyond themselves.
- Need for privacy and independence from culture and environment (autonomy).
- Continued freshness of appreciation of ordinary experiences.
- Occasional "peak experiences" — moments of intense joy, wonder and self-transcendence.
- Deep, genuine interpersonal relationships, though often with a smaller circle of people.
- Democratic character structure — respect for all persons regardless of status.
- Strong ethical sense and creativity in whatever they undertake.
Educational Implications
- Teachers should ensure students' basic needs (safety, belonging, esteem) are met before expecting high motivation for learning/growth.
- Classrooms should provide freedom, choice and opportunities for creative self-expression to nurture self-actualising tendencies.
- Guidance programmes should aim not just at solving problems but at helping individuals realise their fullest potential.
Discuss the characteristics of good psychological test.
Meaning of Psychological Test
A psychological test is a standardised instrument designed to measure an individual's mental traits, abilities, personality or behaviour objectively and systematically.
Characteristics of a Good Psychological Test
- Reliability — the test should yield consistent results on repeated administration under similar conditions.
- Validity — the test should measure what it claims/intends to measure (content, criterion and construct validity).
- Objectivity — scoring and interpretation should not be influenced by the examiner's personal judgement or bias.
- Standardisation — uniform procedures for administration, scoring and interpretation, along with established norms for comparison.
- Norms — availability of adequate normative data representing the population for meaningful score interpretation.
- Practicability/Usability — the test should be easy to administer, economical in time and cost, and simple to score.
- Discriminating power — items should effectively differentiate between individuals with high and low levels of the trait being measured.
- Comprehensiveness — the test should adequately cover the entire domain/content it intends to measure.
- Adequate length — long enough to be reliable, but not so long as to cause fatigue or loss of motivation.
A test lacking any of these characteristics, especially reliability and validity, cannot be considered a scientifically sound measuring instrument for educational or psychological use.
Explain stages of counselling process & skills required in counselling process.
Stages of the Counselling Process
- 1. Establishing rapport — building trust and a warm, accepting relationship with the client.
- 2. Problem identification/exploration — helping the client express and clarify their concerns.
- 3. Assessment/diagnosis — gathering information through interview, tests and case history to understand the problem's nature and causes.
- 4. Goal setting — collaboratively establishing what the client wants to achieve through counselling.
- 5. Intervention/working stage — applying appropriate counselling techniques to help the client explore options, gain insight and develop coping strategies.
- 6. Evaluation — reviewing progress toward the goals set.
- 7. Termination/follow-up — ending the counselling relationship when goals are achieved, with follow-up to ensure sustained progress.
Skills Required in the Counselling Process
- Active listening — fully attending to and understanding the client's verbal and non-verbal communication.
- Empathy — understanding and reflecting the client's feelings without judgement.
- Unconditional positive regard — accepting the client without conditions or criticism.
- Genuineness/congruence — being authentic and honest in the counselling relationship.
- Questioning skills — using open and closed questions appropriately to explore the client's situation.
- Reflection and paraphrasing — restating the client's message to confirm understanding.
- Summarising — periodically consolidating key points discussed.
- Confidentiality and ethical sensitivity — maintaining trust through professional ethics.
Discuss "occupational information in India".
Meaning of Occupational Information

- School/college guidance and placement cells providing localised occupational guidance.
Challenges in Occupational Information in India
- Rapidly changing job market (technology-driven changes) making information quickly outdated.
- Uneven access to updated occupational information between urban and rural areas.
- Lack of trained career counsellors in many schools to interpret and use available information effectively.
- Limited information about emerging and non-traditional careers, especially in rural/vernacular contexts.
Strengthening occupational information systems — through digital platforms, trained counsellors and regular updates — is essential for effective career guidance in India's rapidly evolving economy.
Explain concept of Mental Health & defence Mechanism. How it protects person from anxiety.
Concept of Mental Health
Mental health is a state of psychological well-being in which an individual realises their own potential, copes with the normal stresses of life, works productively and contributes to their community, as defined by WHO.
Concept of Defence Mechanism
Defence mechanisms are unconscious psychological strategies employed by the ego to protect the individual from anxiety, guilt or emotional threats arising from internal conflicts or external stressors.
Common Defence Mechanisms
- Repression — pushing threatening thoughts into the unconscious.
- Rationalisation — justifying unacceptable behaviour with logical-sounding excuses.
- Projection — attributing one's own unacceptable feelings to others.
- Sublimation — redirecting unacceptable impulses into socially acceptable activities.
- Displacement, denial, regression, compensation — other common mechanisms.
How Defence Mechanisms Protect from Anxiety
- They act as a psychological buffer, reducing the intensity of anxiety by distorting or disguising the anxiety-provoking reality.
- They allow the ego to function without being overwhelmed by threatening impulses or unacceptable thoughts.
- By channelling emotional energy into acceptable outlets (e.g., sublimation), they help maintain self-esteem and social functioning.
- They provide temporary relief, giving the individual time to gather psychological resources to cope more directly with the underlying problem later.
However, when defence mechanisms are used excessively or exclusively (avoiding the real problem altogether), they can hinder healthy long-term adjustment and mental health, making professional counselling necessary to address the root cause.
Define follow up services & discuss its objectives & types.
Definition of Follow-up Services
Follow-up service is a guidance service that involves keeping track of individuals after they have received guidance/counselling or completed a programme, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the assistance provided and offer further help if needed.
Objectives of Follow-up Services
- To evaluate the effectiveness of guidance and counselling services provided.
- To determine whether the individual has successfully adjusted to their educational, vocational or personal situation.
- To provide additional guidance/support if the earlier intervention was insufficient.
- To gather feedback for improving the guidance programme and its methods.
- To maintain continuous contact and support for individuals in transition (e.g., students who have left school, graduates entering jobs).
- To build a database on career/life outcomes useful for future guidance planning.
Types of Follow-up Services
- Follow-up of school leavers/dropouts — tracking students who left school to understand reasons and provide alternative guidance.
- Follow-up of graduates — studying how graduates fare in higher education or employment to evaluate programme effectiveness.
- Follow-up of the employed — checking job satisfaction and adjustment of those placed in occupations.
- Follow-up of counselled cases — reviewing whether individuals who received personal/emotional counselling have shown sustained improvement.
- Curriculum follow-up — using alumni feedback to review and improve curriculum and guidance programme design.
Follow-up services thus close the loop of the guidance process, ensuring guidance is not a one-time event but a continuous, evaluative and improving system.
