(Phenomenological Research)

Educational Research-II

M.Ed. IIIrd Semester (Reg./ATKT/Ex.) Examination, 2022-23
BH-48 / Paper-II Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 80
Instructions: Question paper divided into Sections A and B — attempt both sections (Total 14 questions).
SECTION A — Short Answer Type Questions
Attempt any 5 of the 7 questions below. Each question carries 5 marks.
1

Census Investigation.

5 Marks
Answer

Census investigation (or census method) is a research method in which data is collected from every single unit of the defined population, rather than from a sample. For example, studying the achievement level of all Class 10 students in a district rather than a sample of them.

  • Merits — provides complete, highly accurate information with no sampling error; useful when the population is small and accessible.
  • Limitations — extremely time-consuming, expensive and often impractical for large populations; not feasible for most educational research due to resource constraints.
  • Use in education — national censuses (e.g., school census by UDISE) use this method to gather complete enrolment and infrastructure data across the country.
2

Ex-post Facto Research.

5 Marks
Answer

Ex-post facto research (literally "from after the fact") is a research design in which the researcher studies the effect of an independent variable that has already occurred naturally, without the researcher having manipulated or controlled it.

  • The researcher starts with observed differences in a dependent variable and works backward to identify possible causal or related factors.
  • Example — studying the effect of parental divorce (already occurred) on children's academic achievement; the researcher cannot manipulate divorce, only study its already-existing effect.
  • Merits — allows study of variables that cannot be ethically or practically manipulated (e.g., smoking, family structure, gender).
  • Limitations — cannot establish definite cause-effect relationships due to lack of control over extraneous variables; risk of reverse causation or confounding variables.
3

Limitations of Socio-metric techniques.

5 Marks
Answer

Sociometric techniques (e.g., sociograms) are used to study social relationships, acceptance and rejection patterns within a group. However, they have several limitations:

  • Results reflect relationships only at a particular point in time — social preferences can change quickly, especially among children.
  • Responses may be influenced by the social desirability bias — individuals may not honestly report negative feelings toward peers.
  • Provides information only about the existence of relationships, not the underlying reasons for choices or rejections.
  • Difficult to use with very young children who may not fully understand the questions being asked.
  • Ethical concerns arise regarding confidentiality, since exposing rejection patterns could harm the socio-emotional wellbeing of rejected individuals.
  • Not easily generalisable — results are specific to the particular group studied and cannot be extended to other settings.
4

Meaning of data.

5 Marks
Answer

Data refers to the raw facts, figures, observations or measurements collected by a researcher during the process of investigation, which serve as the basis for analysis, interpretation and drawing conclusions.

  • Primary data — data collected first-hand by the researcher directly from the source (through tests, interviews, questionnaires, observation).
  • Secondary data — data already collected and published by someone else, used by the researcher for further analysis (e.g., government reports, previous research studies).
  • Quantitative data — data expressed in numerical form (test scores, ratings).
  • Qualitative data — data expressed in descriptive, non-numerical form (interview transcripts, observation notes).

Data, in its raw form, has little meaning until it is systematically organised, analysed and interpreted to produce meaningful information and research findings.

APA style of writing bibliography.

5 Marks
Answer

APA (American Psychological Association) style is a widely used standardised format for citing sources and preparing the reference list/bibliography in educational, psychological and social science research.

Key Features

  • Entries are arranged in alphabetical order by the author's surname.
  • Basic format for a book: Author, A. A. (Year). Title of work. Publisher.
  • Basic format for a journal article: Author, A. A. (Year). Title of article. Journal Name, volume(issue), page numbers.
  • In-text citations use the author-date format — e.g., (Smith, 2020).
  • Book/journal titles are italicised; article titles are not italicised or placed in quotes.
  • A "hanging indent" is used — the first line of each reference is flush left, and subsequent lines are indented.

APA style ensures uniformity, gives due credit to original authors, avoids plagiarism, and allows readers to locate the cited sources easily.

6

Appendices in a research report.

5 Marks
Answer

Appendices are supplementary materials placed at the end of a research report, containing detailed information that is too lengthy or technical to include in the main body but is important for reference and transparency.

Common Contents of Appendices

  • Copies of research tools used — questionnaires, interview schedules, test items.
  • Raw data tables and detailed statistical computations.
  • Letters of permission/consent forms used in data collection.
  • Detailed sample characteristics or additional charts/graphs.
  • Any supplementary technical or supporting material.

Importance

  • Keeps the main report concise and readable while still providing complete documentation.
  • Allows other researchers to verify, replicate or scrutinise the methodology and data in detail.
  • Each appendix is usually labelled (Appendix A, Appendix B, etc.) and referred to at relevant points in the main text.
7

Attitude scales.

5 Marks
Answer

Attitude scales are standardised psychological instruments designed to measure an individual's favourable or unfavourable disposition (attitude) toward a particular object, person, idea or situation.

Common Types of Attitude Scales

  • Likert scale — respondents indicate their level of agreement/disagreement with statements on a scale (e.g., strongly agree to strongly disagree).
  • Thurstone scale — uses a set of statements pre-rated by judges on a scale of favourability; respondents select statements they agree with.
  • Guttman scale — statements arranged in a cumulative order, such that agreement with a stronger statement implies agreement with weaker ones.
  • Semantic differential scale — respondents rate a concept on a series of bipolar adjective scales (e.g., good-bad, strong-weak).

Uses in Education

  • Measuring students' attitudes toward subjects, teachers or school.
  • Assessing teacher attitudes toward innovative teaching methods or inclusive education.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of an intervention or programme by measuring attitude change.

Write the characteristics of a good experimental research. Indicate uses of experimental research in the field of education.

11 Marks
Answer

Characteristics of Good Experimental Research

  • Manipulation of the independent variable — the researcher deliberately controls/varies the independent variable to observe its effect.
  • Control of extraneous variables — factors other than the independent variable that could affect the outcome are controlled or held constant.
  • Randomisation — subjects are randomly assigned to experimental and control groups to eliminate selection bias.
  • Use of control group — a comparison group that does not receive the treatment, providing a baseline for comparison.
  • Replicability — the experiment should be described clearly enough that other researchers can repeat it and verify results.
  • Objectivity — measurement and interpretation should be free from researcher bias.
  • Establishes cause-effect relationships — unlike other designs, well-controlled experiments can demonstrate causality, not just correlation.

Uses of Experimental Research in Education

  • Comparing the effectiveness of different teaching methods (e.g., activity-based vs. lecture method) on student achievement.
  • Testing the impact of new curricula, teaching aids or technology (e.g., use of ICT) on learning outcomes.
  • Evaluating the effect of motivational or reinforcement techniques on student performance.
  • Studying the impact of classroom environment or seating arrangement on attention and learning.
  • Providing scientific evidence for evidence-based policy decisions in education.
9

What is survey method of research; Distinguish between descriptive survey method and analytical survey method.

11 Marks
Answer

Meaning of Survey Method

The survey method is a research design used to collect information from a sample of a population, typically through questionnaires, interviews or observation, to describe existing conditions, practices, attitudes or opinions at a given point in time.

Descriptive Survey Method

  • Aims to systematically describe the current status of a phenomenon, situation or population — "what is."
  • Answers questions like who, what, when, where — without analysing the underlying reasons or relationships in depth.
  • Example — a survey describing the number of schools with computer labs in a district.

Analytical Survey Method

  • Goes beyond mere description to analyse relationships between variables — examining "why" and "how" a phenomenon occurs.
  • Involves testing hypotheses and studying correlations or associations between variables using appropriate statistical techniques.
  • Example — a survey analysing the relationship between availability of computer labs and student achievement in computer science.

Key Differences

  • Purpose — descriptive survey aims to describe; analytical survey aims to explain relationships.
  • Depth — descriptive survey is surface-level; analytical survey involves deeper statistical analysis.
  • Hypothesis — descriptive surveys may not require a hypothesis; analytical surveys typically test specific hypotheses.
  • Outcome — descriptive survey produces a factual profile; analytical survey produces insight into causal or associative relationships.
10

Explain the nature, advantages and limitations of factorial design.

11 Marks
Answer

Nature of Factorial Design

Factorial design is an experimental design in which the researcher studies the effect of two or more independent variables (factors) simultaneously, along with their interaction effects, on a dependent variable.

  • Each factor may have two or more levels — e.g., a 2×2 factorial design studies two factors, each with two levels, resulting in four experimental conditions.
  • Allows study of both main effects (the independent effect of each factor) and interaction effects (how factors combine to influence the outcome).
  • Example — studying the effect of teaching method (Factor A: activity-based vs. lecture) and class size (Factor B: small vs. large) on student achievement, including whether the effectiveness of teaching method depends on class size (interaction).

Advantages

  • More efficient than conducting separate experiments for each factor — saves time, resources and subjects.
  • Allows detection of interaction effects, which single-factor designs cannot reveal.
  • Provides more comprehensive and realistic understanding of how multiple variables jointly influence outcomes in real educational settings.
  • Increases the generalisability of findings since results are tested across combinations of conditions.

Limitations

  • Becomes increasingly complex to design, conduct and analyse as the number of factors/levels increases.
  • Requires a larger sample size to maintain adequate statistical power across all cells/conditions.
  • Interpretation of higher-order interactions (three or more factors) can become statistically and conceptually difficult.
  • Requires more resources, time and careful control compared to simple single-factor designs.
11

What is a questionnaire? Discuss types and limitations of questionnaire.

11 Marks
Answer

Meaning of Questionnaire

A questionnaire is a research tool consisting of a set of written questions or statements administered to respondents to collect information about their opinions, attitudes, behaviour or characteristics.

Types of Questionnaire

  • Structured/closed-ended questionnaire — provides fixed response options (yes/no, multiple choice, rating scales), making responses easy to quantify and analyse.
  • Unstructured/open-ended questionnaire — allows respondents to answer in their own words, providing richer, more detailed but harder-to-analyse data.
  • Mixed questionnaire — combines both structured and open-ended items.
  • Based on mode of administration: mailed questionnaire, online questionnaire, and questionnaire administered in person.

Limitations of Questionnaire

  • Low response rate, especially for mailed/online questionnaires, potentially introducing non-response bias.
  • No opportunity to clarify ambiguous questions or probe deeper, unlike an interview.
  • Requires respondents to be literate and willing to write down their responses honestly.
  • Risk of superficial or careless responses, especially with lengthy questionnaires.
  • Cannot capture non-verbal cues or context that an interviewer might otherwise observe.
  • Poorly worded or leading questions can bias responses, requiring careful pilot testing before use.
12

What is the rationale of case study? Explain various steps of a case study.

11 Marks
Answer

Rationale of Case Study

The case study method is used when the researcher wants an in-depth, holistic understanding of a single unit — an individual, group, institution or event — within its real-life context, rather than a superficial understanding across a large sample.

  • It is particularly rational when studying rare, complex or unique phenomena (e.g., a gifted child, a specific school reform) that cannot be adequately understood through surveys or experiments.
  • It allows the researcher to explore the "how" and "why" of a phenomenon in its natural setting, capturing complexity that quantitative methods might miss.
  • It is useful for generating hypotheses and theoretical insights that can later be tested more broadly.

Steps of a Case Study

  • 1. Selection of the case — identifying and clearly defining the individual, group or unit to be studied.
  • 2. Formulation of objectives — clarifying what aspects of the case will be explored.
  • 3. Data collection — gathering information from multiple sources: interviews, observation, documents, records, tests.
  • 4. Organisation of data — systematically arranging the collected data chronologically or thematically.
  • 5. Analysis and interpretation — identifying patterns, themes and causal factors within the case.
  • 6. Diagnosis — arriving at a comprehensive understanding of the problem/phenomenon under study.
  • 7. Recommendations/reporting — presenting findings, along with suggestions for remedial action or further research, in a detailed narrative report.
13

What is a qualitative research? Explain phenomenology or Ethnography type of research with suitable examples.

11 Marks
Answer

Meaning of Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is a type of research that explores and understands the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to social or human phenomena, using non-numerical data such as words, images and observations, typically gathered in natural settings.

Phenomenological Research

Phenomenology is a qualitative research approach that seeks to understand and describe the lived experience of individuals regarding a particular phenomenon, focusing on how they perceive, interpret and give meaning to that experience.

  • The researcher sets aside their own preconceptions ("bracketing") to authentically capture participants' subjective experience.
  • Data is typically collected through in-depth interviews, asking participants to describe their experience in detail.
  • Example — a study exploring "the lived experience of first-generation learners transitioning into higher education," where researchers interview several such students to understand the essence of their shared experience — challenges, emotions and meaning-making.

Ethnographic Research (Alternative)

Ethnography involves the researcher immersing themselves in a community or group's natural setting over an extended period, to study their culture, behaviours and social interactions from an insider's perspective.

  • Uses participant observation, in-depth interviews and field notes as primary tools.
  • Example — a researcher spending several months in a tribal school to study the everyday teaching-learning culture and how local customs interact with the formal curriculum.

Both approaches provide rich, contextual, in-depth understanding that quantitative methods cannot capture, making them valuable for studying complex educational and social phenomena.

14

Explain the general procedures used in the development of a psychological test.

11 Marks
Answer

General Procedure for Developing a Psychological Test

  • 1. Planning the test — defining the purpose, target population, and the trait/construct to be measured, and reviewing existing literature/tests on the construct.
  • 2. Item writing — preparing a large pool of items covering all dimensions of the construct, ensuring clarity and appropriate difficulty level.
  • 3. Preliminary/try-out administration — administering the draft test to a small sample to identify ambiguous, too easy or too difficult items.
  • 4. Item analysis — statistically analysing each item's difficulty level and discriminating power, retaining good items and discarding or revising poor ones.
  • 5. Reliability determination — establishing the test's consistency using methods like test-retest, split-half or internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha).
  • 6. Validity determination — establishing that the test measures what it intends to measure (content, criterion-related and construct validity).
  • 7. Standardisation — administering the final test to a large, representative sample to establish norms (percentiles, standard scores) for score interpretation.
  • 8. Preparation of manual — writing detailed instructions for administration, scoring, interpretation, along with the established norms, reliability and validity data.
  • 9. Publication and periodic revision — making the test available for use, followed by periodic review and re-standardisation as needed over time.

Following this systematic procedure ensures that the resulting psychological test is scientifically sound, reliable, valid and useful for its intended purpose.
