अथवा / OR

अथवा / OR

(Job Analysis)

1

What is counselling? How it is distinguished with guidance? Discuss principles of guidance and counselling.

16 Marks
Answer

Meaning of Counselling

Counselling is a face-to-face, helping relationship between a trained counsellor and a client, aimed at helping the individual understand themselves, resolve emotional or personal problems, and make well-informed decisions through a process of self-exploration and guided interaction.

Guidance vs Counselling

  • Scope — Guidance is broader (educational, vocational, personal); counselling is a specialised, intensive part of guidance focusing on personal-emotional issues.
  • Nature — Guidance can be given in groups; counselling is essentially individual and confidential.
  • Approach — Guidance is largely informational/advisory; counselling is therapeutic and process-oriented, relying on dialogue.
  • Provider — Guidance may be given by teachers/mentors; counselling requires a professionally trained counsellor.
  • Depth — Guidance addresses surface-level choices; counselling deals with deeper emotional/psychological concerns.

Principles of Guidance and Counselling

  • Principle of individual differences — every learner is unique and must be understood accordingly.
  • Principle of all-round development — guidance addresses cognitive, emotional and social growth.
  • Principle of continuity — guidance is a continuous, developmental process, not a one-time event.
  • Principle of cooperation — involves teachers, parents and specialists working together.
  • Principle of confidentiality — personal information shared must be kept private.
  • Principle of acceptance and respect — the counsellor accepts the client without judgment.
  • Principle of self-direction — the ultimate goal is to help the individual become self-reliant in decision-making.
OR

What type of guidance and counselling is necessary at professional institutions. Elaborate with suitable examples.

Answer

Professional institutions (engineering, medical, management, teacher-training colleges) have learners at a critical career-entry stage, requiring specialised guidance and counselling services:

  • Educational guidance — helping students choose electives, specialisations and further study options (e.g., which branch of engineering, PG specialisation).
  • Vocational/career guidance — placement counselling, resume building, interview preparation, information about industry trends and job roles.
  • Personal-emotional counselling — addressing exam stress, performance anxiety, homesickness and adjustment problems, which are common in professional courses due to high workload.
  • Peer and social guidance — helping students build healthy peer relationships and cope with competitive environments.
  • Mental health counselling — dealing with depression, burnout and suicidal tendencies, which are unfortunately significant concerns in high-pressure professional courses (e.g., medical/engineering colleges).
  • Entrepreneurship and skill guidance — for students inclined toward start-ups or self-employment rather than jobs.

Example: In an engineering college, a placement cell provides vocational guidance while a student counselling centre offers personal counselling for stress management before examinations — together ensuring holistic student development and successful professional transition.

2

What is occupational guidance? Discuss various sources of occupational information and how you will use the information in the class?

16 Marks
Answer

Meaning of Occupational Guidance

Occupational guidance is a systematic process of helping individuals understand various occupations, assess their own aptitudes, interests and abilities, and make informed career choices suited to their potential and the world of work.

Sources of Occupational Information

  • Printed sources — career booklets, employment newspapers, occupational monographs, government gazettes.
  • Government agencies — Employment Exchanges, National Career Service (NCS) portal, NCERT/NIEPA publications.
  • Professional and industry bodies — chambers of commerce, professional associations providing updated job-market data.
  • Career talks/guest lectures — by professionals visiting the institution to describe their occupations first-hand.
  • Mass media — television, radio, newspapers, internet/websites, career portals and social media.
  • Field visits/industrial trips — direct observation of work settings.
  • Career conferences and exhibitions — organised by schools/colleges/industries.
  • Alumni networks — former students sharing real career experiences.

Use of Occupational Information in the Classroom

  • Integrating career-related content into subject teaching (e.g., discussing careers linked to a science topic).
  • Organising career talks, panel discussions and career weeks.
  • Maintaining a career corner/resource file in the classroom or library.
  • Using case studies and project work related to different occupations.
  • Conducting group discussions and debates on emerging career trends.
  • Displaying occupational charts, posters and using audio-visual aids.

Thus, systematically collected occupational information, when purposefully used in classroom transaction, helps students make realistic and informed career decisions.

OR

Elaborate (a) Job Analysis (b) Job profile.

Answer

Elaborate: (a) Job Analysis

Job Analysis is the systematic process of collecting, studying and recording information about the duties, responsibilities, required skills, working conditions and outcomes of a specific job.

  • It involves methods like observation, interview, questionnaire and record review.
  • Produces two key outputs: Job Description (what the job involves) and Job Specification (qualities needed to do the job).
  • Used in career counselling to match a student's aptitude with the demands of specific occupations.
  • Helps in curriculum planning for vocational courses and in recruitment/selection processes.

Elaborate: (b) Job Profile

Job Profile is a comprehensive summary that outlines a job's title, responsibilities, required qualifications, skills, experience, salary range and career growth prospects.

  • It gives students/counsellors a quick, holistic overview of an occupation for comparison and decision-making.
  • Includes information on work environment, reporting structure and future scope.
  • Serves as a practical, ready-reference tool in career guidance sessions and counselling.

Together, job analysis and job profile provide the factual foundation on which sound occupational guidance and realistic career planning are built.

3

What is personal guidance? Discuss its need, methodology and strategies with suitable examples.

16 Marks
Answer

Meaning of Personal Guidance

Personal guidance is the assistance provided to an individual in understanding and resolving problems related to their personal, social, emotional and psychological life, so that they can achieve better self-adjustment and personality development.

Need for Personal Guidance

  • To help students cope with emotional problems — anxiety, low self-esteem, family conflicts.
  • To support healthy social relationships and peer adjustment.
  • To handle developmental crises (adolescence-related identity issues).
  • To prevent maladjustment, indiscipline and behavioural problems.
  • To promote mental health and holistic personality development.

Methodology

  • Individual interview/counselling — one-to-one confidential discussion.
  • Case study method — in-depth study of a student's background and problem.
  • Observation — of behaviour in classroom and social settings.
  • Psychological testing — personality inventories, adjustment scales.
  • Cumulative records — analysing academic and personal history over time.

Strategies (with example)

  • Building trust and rapport before addressing sensitive issues.
  • Using active listening and empathy (e.g., a counsellor helping a student overcome exam anxiety through relaxation techniques and reassurance).
  • Involving parents/teachers when required, while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Referral to specialists (psychologist/psychiatrist) for serious problems.

Example: A student showing sudden withdrawal from friends and falling grades may be guided through individual counselling sessions to uncover an underlying family issue and supported with coping strategies.

OR

What is personal guidance? Elaborate the areas of personal guidance with suitable examples with remedies.

Answer

  • Home/family adjustment — conflict with parents, broken families. Remedy: family counselling, involving parents sensitively.
  • Moral-ethical guidance — value confusion, dishonesty. Remedy: value education, moral discussions, role modelling.
  • Self-concept and confidence-building — low self-esteem. Remedy: encouragement, success experiences, positive reinforcement.

Example: A student facing social isolation due to poor communication skills may be guided through group activities and assertiveness training as a remedy, helping them build confidence and integrate socially.

Answer

(a) Issues and Challenges of Guidance

  • Shortage of trained counsellors in schools and colleges.
  • Lack of awareness among students/parents about the value of guidance services.
  • Social stigma attached to seeking counselling, especially for mental health issues.
  • Inadequate infrastructure — no dedicated guidance rooms, limited testing materials.
  • Overemphasis on academics leaving little time/priority for guidance activities.
  • Diversity of student needs — rural-urban, socio-economic and cultural differences make uniform guidance difficult.
  • Lack of updated occupational/educational information in a rapidly changing job market.
  • Absence of policy-level integration of guidance services into the regular curriculum.

(b) Group Dynamics and Group Guidance

Group dynamics refers to the interactive forces, processes and relationships that operate within a group and influence its members' attitudes and behaviour.

Group guidance is the process of providing guidance services to a number of individuals simultaneously through planned group activities, discussions and interactions, addressing common needs efficiently.

  • Techniques include group discussion, role play, sociodrama, career talks and orientation programmes.
  • Benefits — saves time, develops social skills, peer learning, reduces stigma of individual counselling.
  • Group dynamics principles (cohesion, leadership, norms, communication) are applied to make group guidance sessions effective.

What is group guidance? Discuss techniques of group guidance.

Answer

Meaning of Group Guidance

Group guidance is a planned educational activity organised for a group of individuals with common needs, aimed at providing information, developing insight and helping members make sound personal, educational and vocational decisions collectively.

Techniques of Group Guidance

  • Group discussion — structured exchange of ideas on a common topic (e.g., career options after Class 12).
  • Career talks/orientation programmes — experts sharing information about courses and occupations.
  • Role play and socio-drama — enacting real-life situations to build social and problem-solving skills.
  • Career conferences and exhibitions — exposing students to a wide range of career information at once.
  • Field trips/educational visits — group exposure to workplaces and institutions.
  • Group testing — administering aptitude/interest inventories to groups for self-understanding.
  • Bulletin boards, career corners and audio-visual programmes — passive but effective group information dissemination.
  • Brainstorming and buzz sessions — encouraging free idea-generation on guidance-related themes.

These techniques make guidance services accessible to a large number of students in a time- and resource-efficient manner while also fostering peer learning.

What is personal management? Illustrate (a) Self management and (b) Time management skills in personal management.

16 Marks
Answer

Meaning of Personal Management

Personal management refers to an individual's ability to plan, organise and regulate their own thoughts, emotions, behaviour and resources (especially time and effort) in order to achieve personal and professional goals effectively.

(a) Self-Management

  • Awareness of one's own strengths, weaknesses, values and goals.
  • Self-regulation of emotions, impulses and behaviour (linked to Goleman's emotional intelligence).
  • Setting realistic short-term and long-term goals and monitoring progress.
  • Practising self-discipline, self-motivation and resilience in the face of setbacks.
  • Example: A student prone to procrastination consciously sets daily study targets and rewards themselves for meeting them.

(b) Time Management

  • Prioritising tasks using techniques like the urgent-important matrix.
  • Preparing realistic daily/weekly schedules or timetables.
  • Avoiding procrastination and reducing time wasted on distractions.
  • Allocating buffer time for unexpected tasks and revision.
  • Example: A student preparing for examinations divides subjects across the week, allotting extra time to difficult topics and revising each subject periodically.

Together, self-management and time-management skills enable an individual to balance academic, personal and social responsibilities effectively, forming the foundation of overall personal management.

Elaborate (a) Problem of decision making (b) Behaviour pattern of Gifted children.

Answer

(a) Problem of Decision Making

  • Decision-making problems arise due to lack of adequate information about options (educational/career choices).
  • Conflicting values or pressures — parental expectations vs personal interest.
  • Indecisiveness caused by fear of failure or low self-confidence.
  • Too many alternatives leading to confusion (overchoice problem).
  • Emotional interference — anxiety and stress impairing rational judgement.
  • Remedies: providing accurate information, using decision-making models (identify problem → gather information → weigh alternatives → decide → evaluate), guidance/counselling support, and involving the individual actively rather than deciding for them.

(b) Behaviour Pattern of Gifted Children

  • High intellectual curiosity, quick grasping power and advanced vocabulary for their age.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and preference for complex, challenging tasks.
  • May show impatience with routine/repetitive classroom work, leading to boredom or behavioural issues.
  • Highly self-critical and perfectionist tendencies, sometimes causing frustration.
  • Advanced moral reasoning and heightened sensitivity to fairness and justice.
  • May face social adjustment difficulties due to being intellectually ahead of age-mates.
  • Guidance implication: Gifted children need enrichment programmes, acceleration where appropriate, and counselling support to handle perfectionism and social-emotional needs.
