Unity in Diversity

Chapter Contents
1. A Rich Diversity
Travel across India by train and you'll see changing landscapes, dresses, food, languages and scripts — India's diversity is often the first thing that strikes visitors.

Fig 1: India's diversity, by the numbers (Anthropological Survey of India's 'People of India' project)
"How, in the face of such bewildering diversity, can a history of India be written? ... India offers unity in diversity."
2. Food for All
Thousands of different dishes exist across India — yet certain staple grains are common almost everywhere: rice, wheat, barley; millets like bajra, jowar, ragi; and various dals. Common spices too: turmeric, cumin, cardamom, ginger.
Same basic ingredients (unity), endless different dishes (diversity) — that's the pattern we'll see again and again in this chapter!
3. Textiles & Clothing
A single unstitched piece of cloth — the sari — is worn across most of India, yet appears in hundreds of varieties: Banarasi, Kanjivaram, Paithani, Patan Patola, Muga, Mysore silks, and countless cotton weaves, each region draping it differently.
Indian "chintz" (printed cotton) became so popular in 17th-century Europe that England and France banned importing it — to protect their own textile industries!
4. Festivals Galore
Makara Sankrānti (~January 14, marking the harvest season) is celebrated across India — under many different regional names, all around the same date:

5. An Epic Spread
This ~2,200-year-old Sanskrit story collection travelled far beyond India:

Fig 3: The Pañchatantra's incredible journey across languages and continents
India's two epics, the Rāmāyaṇa and the Mahābhārata (~7,000 pages combined in original Sanskrit), have been adapted into nearly every Indian language — plus countless folk and tribal versions, including among the Bhils, Gonds and Mundas.
A survey found about 100 folk versions of the Mahābhārata in Tamil Nadu alone — imagine the total for all of India!
6. The Underlying Unity
Indian culture celebrates diversity as an enrichment, never losing sight of the underlying unity that nourishes it. As Nehru observed, epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata gave a shared "richness and content" to people's minds across every region — diversity enriches, it doesn't divide.
