What is urban planning? What are the risks of ignoring sustainable urban planning?

Urban planning is the process of designing and managing a city's physical layout, infrastructure, and services to ensure that it functions well for all its residents — now and in the future. It involves decisions about where residential areas, commercial zones, industrial areas, parks, roads, schools, hospitals, and waste management systems are located.

Risks of ignoring sustainable urban planning as cities expand:
  • Urban flooding: When forests and fields are replaced by concrete, rainwater cannot be absorbed by the ground. Chennai's devastating floods (2015), Mumbai (2005), and Bengaluru's repeated flooding are consequences of unplanned development that blocked natural drainage channels.
  • Traffic congestion: Unplanned growth creates cities where homes, offices, schools, and markets are poorly connected, forcing everyone into cars — gridlocking cities for hours daily.

  • State policy: Sikkim has strict Inner Line Permit requirements for non-Sikkimese, deliberately limiting migration into the state to protect its indigenous communities and fragile ecology.
