1. How Do We Learn About the Past?

History is the study of the human past. We reconstruct it using several specialists:
SpecialistStudies
GeologistPhysical features of the Earth โ€” soil, rocks, mountains, rivers
PalaeontologistRemains of ancient plants, animals, humans (fossils)
AnthropologistHuman societies and cultures, oldest times to present
ArchaeologistDigs up remains โ€” tools, pots, beads, bones, bricks
last ice age End of 12,000 BCE 10,000 BCE First settlements, agriculture begins technology Pottery 8,000 BCE 6,000 BCE Copper metallurgy begins civilisation Indus-Sarasvatฤซ 3,300 BCE 560 BCE Birth of the Buddha Jesus Birth of 1 CE 2024 CE We are here A journey through history (dates not to scale)

2. How is Time Measured in History?

A timeline is a tool that shows dates and events in sequence over a period โ€” helping us understand what happened before or after something else.

Today, the Gregorian calendar is used worldwide (alongside Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, Chinese and other calendars for festivals). It counts years from the conventional birth year of Jesus Christ.

CE (Common Era) โ€” years counted forward from that reference point (earlier called AD).
BCE (Before Common Era) โ€” years counted backward from that point (earlier called BC).
India's independence: 1947 CE. Birth of Gautama Buddha: approximately 560 BCE.

3. BCE / CE โ€” Watch Out for This!

The Gregorian calendar has no "Year 0" โ€” the year 1 CE begins immediately after 1 BCE!
2 BCE 1 BCE 1 CE 2 CE Only 3 years pass (no Year 0!) 1 BCE is followed directly by 1 CE

Fig 2: From 2 BCE to 2 CE, only 3 years actually pass โ€” not 4!

To find years between a BCE date and a CE date: add them, then subtract 1.
If the Buddha was born in 560 BCE, and now it's 2024 CE, then: 560 + 2024 โˆ’ 1 = 2,583 years ago.

4. Century & Millennium

Decade = 10 years. Century = 100 years. Millennium = 1,000 years.
We are currently in the 21st century CE (2001โ€“2100) and the 3rd millennium CE (2001โ€“3000).
Centuries/millenniums BCE count backward from 1 BCE โ€” e.g. the 3rd century BCE = 300 BCE to 201 BCE.

5. Sources of History

A source of history is a place, person, text or object that gives us information about the past. Historians piece together many sources โ€” like a jigsaw puzzle, where some pieces may still be missing!
Sources of History Archaeology tools, pottery coins, monuments human/animal remains Literary Vedas, Itihasas historical texts poems and plays Oral folklore collection of stories genealogies Artistic paintings, panels sculptures monuments

Fig 3: The four main categories of historical sources

Archaeological = physical remains (tools, coins, monuments).
Literary = written texts (Vedas, Itihasas, historical chronicles).
Oral = spoken traditions (folklore, stories passed down).
Artistic = paintings, sculptures, panels.
In the last 50 years, science has added new sources too โ€” studies of ancient climate, chemical analysis, and even the genetics of ancient people!

6. Early Human Communities

As communities grew: hamlets โ†’ villages โ†’ towns. Leaders ("chieftains") looked after community welfare; land was often collectively owned and farmed, not individually.
Key technologies that changed early life: pottery (for storing food/water) and metal tools (copper first, then iron) โ€” leading eventually to the rise of civilisation.

๐ŸŽฏ Quick Summary

  • History = study of the human past, pieced together by geologists, palaeontologists, anthropologists and archaeologists.
  • A timeline shows the sequence of events; time is measured using the Gregorian calendar (CE/BCE).
  • โš ๏ธ There's no Year 0 โ€” to find years between a BCE and CE date, add and subtract 1.
  • Decade = 10 yrs, Century = 100 yrs, Millennium = 1,000 yrs.
  • 4 types of historical sources: Archaeological, Literary, Oral, Artistic.
  • Early humans progressed from hamlets to villages to towns, aided by pottery and metal tools.
