⚡ 4.1 Magnetic & Non-magnetic Materials

Long ago, sailors discovered naturally occurring magnets called lodestones. Today, we make artificial magnets from iron and other materials.

🔑 Key Definitions
  • Magnetic materials — Materials that are attracted towards a magnet (e.g., iron, nickel, cobalt)
  • Non-magnetic materials — Materials that are NOT attracted towards a magnet (e.g., wood, plastic, rubber, glass, copper, aluminium)

🔴🔵 4.2 Poles of a Magnet

When iron filings are placed near a magnet, they stick most at the two ends — these are called poles.

🧲 Magnetic Poles
Every magnet has TWO poles:
🔴 North Pole (N) — points towards geographic north when freely suspended
🔵 South Pole (S) — points towards geographic south
⚠️ Very Important Facts about Poles!
  • Iron filings stick MOST at the poles — maximum magnetic force is at poles
  • A magnet CANNOT have a single pole — poles always come in pairs (N and S)
  • If you break a magnet, each piece STILL has both a N and S pole
  • Even the smallest piece of a magnet has both poles!

🧭 4.3 Finding Directions Using Magnets

When a bar magnet is freely suspended, it always points in the North-South direction. This property makes magnets useful as compasses!

🧭 Magnetic Compass
A magnetic compass is a device with a freely pivoting magnetic needle. The needle always points North, helping us find directions.
⛵ Historical Fact
Ancient sailors used lodestones and later magnetic compasses to navigate oceans when stars were not visible. The word "compass" helped sailors travel safely across the seas!
Earth itself is a giant magnet! The Earth's magnetic North Pole is near the geographic South Pole, and vice versa. That's why the N pole of a compass needle points North! 🌍

  • Unlike poles ATTRACT each other — North attracts South (N→←S)
  • Like poles REPEL each other — North repels North (N←→N) and South repels South (S←→S)

🧪 Identifying Poles
You can identify if an object is a magnet by checking: if it REPELS a known magnet pole, it IS a magnet. If it only attracts, it could be just magnetic material (not a magnet)!

🔧 4.5 Uses of Magnets in Daily Life
  • Compass — Navigation (finding directions)
  • Pencil boxes, purses — Magnetic clasps to keep them closed
  • Refrigerator door — Magnetic seal to keep door shut
  • Loudspeakers, microphones — Convert electrical signals to sound
  • Electric motors — In fans, washing machines, mixers
  • MRI machines in hospitals — Powerful magnets used for scanning
  • Maglev trains — Float above track using magnetic repulsion
  • Magnetic cranes — Lift heavy iron/steel objects in factories
