🌏 India's rich climatic diversity — from snow peaks to tropical coasts 🌊
"May the rains be timely, may the Earth be lush with vegetation, may this country be free from turmoil..." — Subhāśhita (Ancient Sanskrit saying)
🌡️ Climate vs Weather
↑ Back to Top
☁️Weather = day-to-day changes in atmosphere (short-term, changes fast)
🌍Climate = average weather of a place over 30+ years — long-term pattern
💡India has 6 main climatic regions due to its vast size and diverse geography
🌿 ✦ 🌿
🌧️ The Monsoon — India's Lifeline

🌧️ Southwest Monsoon — rains that feed India
@edugrown · @edugrown
💧 Monsoon brings life — and sometimes floods
🌊Monsoon = seasonal reversal of winds that brings rain to India
📅Southwest Monsoon: June–September — comes from Arabian Sea & Bay of Bengal
📅Northeast Monsoon: October–December — brings rain to southeast India (Tamil Nadu, Andhra)
🌾About 75% of India's annual rainfall comes from the Southwest Monsoon!
🏞️Monsoon is crucial for agriculture, rivers, groundwater, and daily life of billions
💡 How does Monsoon form?
In summer, land heats up faster than sea → hot air over land rises → cool moist air from sea rushes in → brings heavy rainfall! This seasonal switch of wind direction is the MONSOON. 🌬️→🌧️

📅 Seasons of India

@edugrown
🍂 India's four distinct seasons
@edugrown
☀️ Hot dry season in the plains
❄️ Cold/Winter
Dec–Feb
→Cool & dry across most of India
→NW India: cold waves & fog
🔥 Hot/Summer
Mar–May
→Very hot, dry weather
→Dust storms in north India
🌧️ Rainy/Monsoon
Jun–Sep
→Heavy rainfall across India
→Southwest monsoon winds
🍂 Retreating Monsoon
Oct–Nov
→Monsoon withdraws from north
→SE India gets rains (NE monsoon)

🗺️ Climatic Regions of India

🥁 Northeast India — high rainfall region, rich culture

🌿 Different vegetation in different climatic zones
| Climate Type | Region | Features |
|---|---|---|
| 🏔️ Alpine/Mountain | Himalayas, J&K, Ladakh | Very cold, heavy snowfall, thin air |
| 🌵 Arid/Desert | Rajasthan (Thar) | Hot & dry, very little rain (<25cm/year) |
| 🌾 Semi-Arid | Punjab, Haryana, parts of Rajasthan | Low to moderate rainfall, hot summers |
| 🌿 Tropical Wet & Dry | Most of peninsular India | Distinct wet & dry seasons, moderate rain |
| 🌳 Tropical Rainforest | Western Ghats, NE India, Andaman | Very heavy rain, warm all year, dense forests |
| 💧 Humid Subtropical | Indo-Gangetic Plains | Hot summers, cool winters, moderate rain |

💧 Rainfall Distribution in India
↑ Back to Top
☔Highest Rainfall: Mawsynram & Cherrapunji (Meghalaya) — among the wettest places on Earth!
🏜️Lowest Rainfall: Jaisalmer, Rajasthan — less than 10 cm per year
🌊Western Ghats: Very heavy rain on windward side, dry on leeward side (Rain Shadow)
🌾Most of India's agriculture depends on the Southwest Monsoon
🌟 Remember!
Rain Shadow Area = area on the leeward side of a mountain that receives very little rain because the mountain blocks the moisture-laden winds 🏔️
Mawsynram (Meghalaya) = one of the wettest places on Earth — receives over 11,000 mm of rain per year! 🌧️
