🧭 Finding Directions
🔑 The Four Cardinal Directions
North, East, South, West — always arranged the same way on a compass, going clockwise from North.
🌅 The Sun RISES in the East and SETS in the West. If you face the rising Sun, you are facing East!
Facing East: Left hand → North  |  Right hand → South  |  Behind you → West
💡 Quick memory trick: "Never Eat Soggy Waffles" — going clockwise N→E→S→W!
🗺️ Reading Maps

Maps show places and routes from a bird's eye view (top-down). Reading clues about direction helps you figure out what's where!

🔑 Direction Clue Chains
Solve map puzzles STEP BY STEP: each clue tells you about ONE thing relative to something ALREADY known. Work through them in logical order!
💡 On a street map, roads are usually named — use the road NAMES along with turn directions (left/right) and compass directions (N/E/S/W) together to trace a route.
🔢 Grid References & Coordinates
🔑 Reading a Coordinate (x, y)
Always move horizontally FIRST (East, along the bottom), then vertically (North, up the side)!
(4, 1) means: move 4 steps East (to column 4), then 1 step North (to row 1)
🌟 The FIRST number = how far EAST (column). The SECOND number = how far NORTH (row). Order matters — (4,1) and (1,4) are DIFFERENT points!
💡 Memory trick: "Along the corridor, then up the stairs" — go sideways first, then up!
🚇 Reading Route Maps (Metro)

Route maps (like metro maps) use different coloured lines for different routes. Stations where TWO lines cross are called interchange stations — you can switch lines there!

To find the BEST route: count how many stations you'd pass through, and how many times you'd need to CHANGE lines. Fewer stations AND fewer changes is usually the best route!

📝 Chapter Summary

  • Facing the rising Sun = facing East; then left=North, right=South, behind=West
  • Solve map clues step-by-step, building on what you already know
  • Grid coordinates (x,y): move East (x) first, then North (y)
  • Route maps use coloured lines; interchange stations let you switch lines
  • Best routes usually have fewer stations and fewer line changes
