Detailed, colourful revision notes โ€” everything you need before your test!

Chapter Contents

1. Classifying Economic Activities

Economic sectors โ€” broad groups of related economic activities. There are three main sectors: primary, secondary and tertiary.
Primary Directly from nature Agriculture, Mining, Fishing, Forestry, Livestock Secondary Processing raw materials Manufacturing, Construction, Electricity, Water supply Tertiary Providing services Healthcare, Banking, Transport, Trade, Communication

Fig 1: The three economic sectors, at a glance

2. Primary Sector

Activities where people directly depend on nature to produce goods โ€” extraction of raw materials from nature.
Cultivating grains, collecting wood from forests, extracting coal from mines, catching fish, collecting eggs from poultry farms โ€” all primary sector activities.

3. Secondary Sector

Activities where people process raw materials from the primary sector into new, usable products.
Grinding grain into flour, extracting oil from groundnuts, converting wood into furniture, turning cotton into cloth, turning steel into cars โ€” all secondary sector.
45 lakh Passenger vehicles (cars) 10.3 lakh Commercial vehicles (trucks) 8.6 lakh Three wheelers 2 crore Two wheelers Vehicles produced in India, 2022 (Secondary Sector example)

Fig 2: India's vehicle manufacturing in 2022 โ€” a huge secondary-sector industry!

4. Tertiary Sector

Also called the service sector โ€” activities that support people in the primary and secondary sectors, without producing a physical good themselves.
Truck drivers transporting goods, vendors selling produce, doctors, teachers, lawyers, pilots, technicians, banking, software development, hotels, airports โ€” all tertiary sector.

5. Interdependence Among Sectors โ€” The AMUL Story

Farmers milk their cows PRIMARY SECTOR AMUL factories process milk into butter, cheese SECONDARY SECTOR Trucks, trains & retail stores sell products TERTIARY SECTOR The AMUL Story: milk's journey through all 3 sectors

Fig 3: How milk passes through all three sectors, from farm to shop

Before AMUL, farmers relied on middlemen who paid low prices. On Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's advice, farmers formed a cooperative โ€” AMUL (1946) โ€” taking control of collection, processing and distribution themselves.
Other famous milk cooperatives: Nandini (Karnataka), Mother Dairy (Delhi-NCR), Aavin (Tamil Nadu), Verka (Punjab), Sudha (Bihar) โ€” all helping farmers gain independence from middlemen!

๐ŸŽฏ Quick Summary

  • Economic activities are grouped into 3 sectors: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary.
  • Primary = directly from nature (farming, mining, fishing).
  • Secondary = processes raw materials into products (manufacturing, construction).
  • Tertiary = provides services (healthcare, banking, transport, trade) โ€” the "service sector".
  • All three sectors are interdependent โ€” the AMUL story shows milk moving from farmer (primary) โ†’ factory (secondary) โ†’ shop (tertiary).
  • Cooperatives like AMUL empower producers by removing dependence on middlemen.
