⏱️ Finding Elapsed Time

To find how much time has PASSED between two clock readings, find the difference between the end time and start time.

3:18 p.m. to 8:18 p.m. = 5 hours (same minutes, just count the hour difference)
💡 Easy trick: If the minutes match in both times, just subtract the hours! If not, break the problem into "round hour" chunks first.
🕐 12-Hour vs 24-Hour Format
🔑 The Key Rule
12-hour format uses a.m./p.m. 24-hour format counts 0 to 23 hours straight through the day (no a.m./p.m. needed).
12-hour24-hour
12:00 midnight → 11:59 a.m.00:00 → 11:59
12:00 noon → 11:59 p.m.12:00 → 23:59
🌟 Converting p.m. to 24-hour: ADD 12 to the hour (except 12:00 noon itself stays 12:00). Example: 2:30 p.m. = 14:30 hours (2+12=14).
💡 a.m. times (except 12 a.m.) stay THE SAME in 24-hour format — just drop the "a.m."!
⏲️ Seconds — Measuring Short Durations
1 minute = 60 seconds
🌟 We use seconds when we need to notice TINY differences in time — like who wins a close race!
ActivityTypical unit
Blinking, snapping fingersSeconds
Melting an ice cube, a phone callMinutes
🔄 Converting Hours, Minutes & Seconds
ConvertMethodExample
Hours → Minutes× 603 hr = 180 min
Minutes → Hours÷ 60150 min = 2 hr 30 min
Minutes → Seconds× 604 min = 240 sec
Seconds → Minutes÷ 60320 sec = 5 min 20 sec
💡 Same idea as km↔m and kg↔g conversions — always ×60 going to the smaller unit, ÷60 going to the bigger unit!
➕ Adding Time to Find New Clock Times

To find "what time will it be after X hours Y minutes," add the hours and minutes separately, then adjust if minutes go past 60.

8:00 hours + 1hr 5min = 9:05 hours
⚠️ Watch for crossing noon or midnight!
If your answer's hour goes past 12 (in 12-hour format) or past 23:59 (in 24-hour format), you may need to switch a.m./p.m. or roll over to the next day!

📝 Chapter Summary

  • Elapsed time = End time − Start time
  • 24-hour format: add 12 to p.m. hours (except 12 noon); a.m. hours stay the same
  • 1 minute = 60 seconds; use seconds for very short/precise durations
  • Hours↔Minutes and Minutes↔Seconds both convert by ×60 or ÷60
  • Adding time: combine hours and minutes separately, regroup if minutes ≥ 60
