🌿 11.1 Asexual Reproduction

Reproduction = biological process by which living beings produce new individuals of their own kind — this is how life continues on Earth.

Asexual reproduction: a single parent produces offspring that are almost exact (genetically identical) copies of the parent.

Sexual reproduction: two parents contribute genetic material — offspring inherit a mix of characteristics, creating small differences (variation).

💡 Seen in unicellular organisms (bacteria, amoeba, yeast) and simple multicellular organisms (hydra, sponge), and also in many plants.

Vegetative Propagation

New plants arise from the vegetative parts (growing parts) of a plant — needs only 1 parent → genetically identical individuals.

  • Potato, ginger: sprout from fleshy underground stems (no seeds needed)
  • Money plant, sugarcane: grow from stem cuttings
  • Bryophyllum: tiny plantlets sprout right from the leaf margin!

Budding

A small outgrowth called a bud forms on the parent (by repeated cell division at a specific site), enlarges, then separates to live independently.

Seen in yeast (unicellular) and hydra (multicellular) — hydra can show many buds growing at once!

Spores form in a sac-like structure at the tip of thread-like hyphae. Millions of lightweight spores are released and float in air — they germinate into new fungi when they land on moist, nutrient-rich surfaces (like bread or fruit).

🧑‍🔬 Louis Pasteur proved new life always comes from pre-existing life (not spontaneous generation) — this gave us the germ theory of disease and led to food/instrument sterilisation practices.
🍞 Fungi are also useful: they degrade organic waste & pollutants, remove heavy metals from industrial waste, and give us antibiotics like penicillin & amoxicillin.
Central process behind asexual reproduction = Mitosis (cell division → 2 genetically identical daughter cells).Offspring produced this way are genetically identical to the parent — called clones.

🧬 Sexual Reproduction & Meiosis

Sexual reproduction needs two parents — both contribute genetic material. But if each parent gave a FULL set of chromosomes, the number would double every generation!

This is solved by Meiosis — a special cell division that halves the chromosome number (diploid → haploid) to form gametes.Gametes: sperm (male) & egg (female) in animals; pollen grain (male) & ovule/egg cell (female) in plants.

🎲 Random mixing of chromosomes during meiosis + fusion of gametes from 2 different parents = huge number of possible combinations → variation among offspring (even siblings differ!). Variation helps species adapt and survive changing environments — the basis of evolution.

🌸 Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants

Flowering plants (angiosperms) are the most diverse group of plants. The flower is the reproductive organ.

Pollination = transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of a flower.

📊 Wind pollination releases far more pollen (lakhs) but has a lower seed-formation success rate than insect pollination (which uses fewer, more "targeted" pollen grains) — both strategies work in their own way!

🌷 Fertilisation & Seed/Fruit Formation

Germination of pollen on stigma

Pollen grain lands on a compatible stigma → grows a pollen tube down the style into the ovary → male gamete travels through it and fuses with the egg cell in the ovule.

Fertilisation = fusion of male & female gametes → forms a zygote (beginning of new life).

Seed dispersal happens via wind, water or animals — this helps the new plant grow away from the parent, avoiding overcrowding & competition. When conditions (water, air, temperature) are favourable, the seed germinates into a new plant.

🥚 Why so many eggs? Fish/amphibians/insects give just enough yolk to hatch a feeding larva stage (e.g. tadpole, caterpillar) — it eats & grows on its own, then transforms into an adult. Reptiles & birds give a full-yolk egg that nourishes the embryo till hatching. In mammals, the embryo grows inside the mother's body.

🥚 Fertilisation & the Menstrual Cycle

Ovulation: from puberty onward, usually one mature egg is released from an ovary every month. Before this, the uterus lining thickens to prepare for a possible pregnancy.

Sperm + Egg → fuse → Zygote forms → undergoes mitotic divisions while travelling to the uterus → implants in the uterus lining = beginning of pregnancy.

If the egg is NOT fertilised…

The egg degenerates in about a day. The thickened uterus lining is no longer needed, so it sheds along with some blood through the vagina — this is menstruation (a period), usually lasting 3–7 days.

🔁 This cycle repeats roughly every 21–35 days (~28 days on average), starting at puberty (age 10–14) and continuing till menopause (~age 50).
💗 Period is your pride: Menstruation is a sign of a healthy reproductive system — not something to feel ashamed of. Use clean menstrual products, change them every 4–6 hours, wash hands before/after, and dispose of used products responsibly (wrap before binning, never flush).
🧬 Baby's biological sex: Mother always gives an X chromosome. Father gives either X (→ XX = girl) or Y (→ XY = boy). So it is the father's chromosome that determines the baby's sex.

Human pregnancy lasts about 9 months, divided into 3 trimesters.

During childbirth, strong uterine contractions push the foetus out through the birth canal. If a normal (vaginal) birth isn't safe/possible, doctors may use medical/surgical delivery methods.

🍼 After birth: breastfeeding gives complete nutrition & protects against disease. Newborns need warmth, timely vaccination, gentle handling. Mother needs good nutrition, rest, and must avoid smoking/alcohol/unadvised medicines.
💛 Post-partum depression (anxiety/fatigue after delivery) is a recognised, treatable condition — mothers should be encouraged to talk to a doctor/nurse/ASHA worker if they feel low or overwhelmed.
🇮🇳 Over 10 lakh ASHA workers across India promote hygiene, immunisation & family planning, and offer advice on maternal care under the National Health Mission.

🩺 Reproductive Health Awareness

Sexual maturity (body becoming capable of reproduction) happens gradually during adolescence — but emotional & social maturity (handling feelings, communicating, making thoughtful decisions) takes longer to develop.

⚠️ Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) spread through close physical contact — e.g. gonorrhoea, herpes, syphilis, genital warts, HIV (can lead to AIDS). Some are not curable yet. Condoms can help prevent transmission.
