🌍 Natural Resources = Resources provided by nature that are useful to living beings. These are our "Nature's Treasures" — Air, Water, Sunlight, Forests, Soil, Minerals, and more!
💨 11.1 Air — Composition & Importance

🔬 Composition of Air
Air is a mixture of gases: - Nitrogen (N₂) — 78% — most abundant gas
- Oxygen (O₂) — 21% — essential for breathing and burning
- Argon, CO₂ & other gases — 1% — small but important amounts
We can survive without food for weeks, without water for days — but WITHOUT OXYGEN for even a few minutes! Oxygen is the most immediately essential gas for our survival. 🫁
- Oxygen — needed for respiration by all living beings; also needed for burning
- Carbon dioxide — used by plants for photosynthesis
- Wind (moving air) — used to run windmills and generate electricity
- Major windmill farms in India: Muppandal (Tamil Nadu), Jaisalmer (Rajasthan), Brahmanvel (Maharashtra)
💡 Firki (paper pinwheel) spins when you blow air on it — same principle as a windmill! Wind energy is renewable and clean.
💧 11.2 Water — Sources & Importance

⚠️ Fresh Water is Limited!
- Water covers 2/3 of Earth's surface, but most is salty ocean water
- Only about 3% of water is freshwater
- Most freshwater is locked in glaciers and ice sheets
- Available freshwater = rivers, lakes, groundwater (very small fraction!)

☀️ 11.3 Energy from the Sun
⚡ The Sun — Our Main Energy Source
The Sun is the primary source of energy on Earth. Almost all energy on Earth — directly or indirectly — comes from the Sun. - Plants use sunlight for photosynthesis — making their own food
- Sunlight provides warmth — regulates Earth's temperature
- Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity
- Wind energy originates from sun — sun heats air unevenly, creating wind
- Fossil fuels (coal, oil) contain ancient solar energy stored by plants
India is one of the world's largest producers of solar energy! The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) manages multiple large solar parks across the country. 🌞
🌲 11.4 Forests
🌿 Why Forests are Treasure
Forests are called the "lungs of the Earth" — they absorb CO₂ and release O₂. - Oxygen production — Trees release oxygen through photosynthesis
- Carbon sink — Absorb CO₂, helping control climate change
- Biodiversity — Home to millions of plant and animal species
- Water cycle — Trees release water vapour (transpiration), contributing to rainfall
- Soil protection — Tree roots hold soil and prevent erosion
- Products — Wood, rubber, paper, fruits, medicines from forests
🚨 Deforestation — A Big Problem!
Cutting down forests for farming, construction, and industry leads to: loss of biodiversity, more CO₂ in air (less trees to absorb it), soil erosion, reduced rainfall, climate change. We must protect forests!🪨 11.5 Soil, Rocks & Minerals
🌍 Soil — The Foundation of Life
Soil is the upper layer of Earth's surface where plants grow. It contains minerals, water, air, and humus (decomposed organic matter). - Minerals — Natural substances found in rocks (iron ore, gold, copper, aluminium)
- Rocks — Solid, naturally occurring masses of minerals
- Soil is formed over thousands of years by weathering of rocks
- Good soil has proper mix of minerals, water, air, and organic matter
- Humus — Decomposed plant/animal material in soil; makes soil fertile
⛽ 11.6 Fossil Fuels
📖 What are Fossil Fuels?
Fossil fuels (coal, petroleum/oil, natural gas) are formed from ancient plant and animal remains buried underground and compressed over millions of years. | Fossil Fuel | Form | Uses |

⚠️ Problems with Fossil Fuels
- They are non-renewable — formed over millions of years, cannot be quickly replaced
- Burning them releases CO₂ and other gases → air pollution → climate change
- They will run out someday — need to shift to renewable energy
