🪞 Reflection Symmetry (Lines of Symmetry)

A shape has reflection symmetry if you can fold it along a line and both halves match exactly. That fold line is called a line of symmetry.

🔑 Making Symmetric Cutouts
For a letter with 1 line of symmetry (like A) — fold paper in HALF, draw only half the letter, cut it out.
For a letter with 2 lines of symmetry (like H) — fold paper into QUARTERS, draw one-quarter, cut it out.
LetterLine(s) of symmetry
E, KHorizontal only
T, VVertical only
X, OBoth horizontal AND vertical
NNeither (no reflection symmetry at all!)
💡 If a shape has BOTH a horizontal AND vertical line of symmetry, you only need to draw ¼ of it!
🌀 Rotational Symmetry
🔑 Definition
A shape has rotational symmetry if it looks EXACTLY the same after being turned by SOME amount less than a full turn (360°).
🎡 A firki (windmill/pinwheel with 4 identical arms) looks the same after 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, AND a full turn — it has rotational symmetry of order 4!

The letter H has rotational symmetry — it looks the same after a half (1/2) turn!

ShapeLooks same after"Order" of symmetry
4-armed pinwheel1/4, 1/2, 3/4, full turnOrder 4
Letter H, S, Z1/2 turn onlyOrder 2
Most irregular shapesOnly a full turn (360°)Order 1 (no real symmetry)
🔢 Symmetry in Digits & Numbers
DigitReflection symmetry?Rotational symmetry?
0✅ Yes (both horizontal & vertical)✅ Yes
3✅ Yes (horizontal only)❌ No
8✅ Yes (both)✅ Yes
1✅ Yes (simple vertical stroke)✅ Yes (in simple form)
2,4,5,6,7,9❌ Generally No❌ No (individually)
🌟 A whole NUMBER can have symmetry too! A palindrome number using only symmetric digits (like 8008 or 1001) has BOTH reflection and rotational symmetry as a complete number!
🌸 Shapes with Both Symmetries

Many beautiful traditional designs — like Rajasthani block prints — combine BOTH reflection and rotational symmetry!

A 4-petal flower design that looks the same after every 1/4 turn has rotational symmetry (order 4). If each petal is also individually mirror-symmetric, the whole flower ALSO has reflection symmetry (multiple lines, through each petal and between petals)!
💡 To sort designs, check separately: (1) Can I fold it and match? → reflection. (2) Can I turn it (less than 360°) and match? → rotational. Some shapes have ONLY one type, some have NEITHER, and some have BOTH!

📝 Chapter Summary

  • Reflection symmetry = folding along a line gives matching halves
  • Rotational symmetry = shape looks the same after turning less than a full circle
  • A shape can have reflection symmetry, rotational symmetry, both, or neither
  • Digits 0 and 8 have both types of symmetry; digit 3 has only reflection
  • Traditional block-print and vegetable-stamp art often uses symmetric designs
