Which of the following is 'not' true about enantiomers ?
A. They have the same chemical reactivity.
B. They have the same specific rotation.
C. They have the same melting or boiling point.
D. They have the same refractive index.
✅ Answer & Solution
✅ Correct Answer: B
Step 1 - Define enantiomers.
Enantiomers are stereoisomers that are non-superimposable MIRROR IMAGES of each other.
They arise when a molecule contains a chiral (asymmetric) carbon.
Step 2 - Identical properties (options A, C, D are TRUE).
Because the two mirror images have identical bond lengths, bond angles and internal
energies, they have IDENTICAL physical properties: melting point, boiling point,
refractive index, density, solubility. They also show IDENTICAL chemical reactivity
towards achiral (optically inactive) reagents.
Step 3 - The one property that differs (option B).
Enantiomers differ ONLY in the direction in which they rotate the plane of
plane-polarised light. The magnitudes of the specific rotations are equal but their
SIGNS are OPPOSITE:
$$[\alpha]_D = +x^\circ \quad \text{and} \quad [\alpha]_D = -x^\circ$$
So it is NOT true that enantiomers have the same specific rotation.
Step 4 - Note.
An equimolar mixture of the two (a racemic mixture) has zero net rotation, because the
rotations cancel out exactly.
