My Brother's Great Invention

Story · told by Anita

Anand at work on one of his 'inventions'.
Anand at work on one of his 'inventions'.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

A funny family story about a boy who thinks he is a scientist — until one of his failed inventions catches a real thief.

Chapter summary

  • 'Who put that water bag here?' Papa roars from the front doorstep, sopping wet and scowling. Ma rushes in to see what the racket is about.
  • The narrator is Anita, fourteen. Her brother Anand, one year younger, had rigged up the 'burglar alarm'. He vanishes and reappears only after dinner, when Papa has cooled down.
  • Anand thinks he is a scientist. He loves tinkering with electrical gadgets, tools, dynamos and planks of wood, and keeps creating 'inventions' that never work out as they are supposed to.
  • There had been a rush of thefts in the colony, so he decided a burglar alarm was needed. He proudly showed Anita his 'blueprint' — a word he loves because it makes him feel professional.
  • The plan: the moment the door opens, the alarm is tripped and makes a clanging sound; a water bag is loosened and falls on the thief's head; then they call the police. Simple.
  • Anita asks how the alarm knows a burglar is opening the door. Anand explains smugly that a thief opens a door stealthily, so he has rigged it to work only when the door is opened gently. Anita is sceptical.
  • Her doubts prove right — Papa, who always opens the door softly, is the one who gets thoroughly soaked. For a week afterwards Anand does not dare try anything new.
  • Then they see the film 'Back to the Future', and Anand decides he must build a time machine too. Papa locks up his tool box and hides the key; Ma keeps a wary eye on her oven and mixer.
  • One day a real thief gets into the house. He turns out to be the man who had recently begun sweeping the compounds in their row of houses — so he knew exactly when each family was out.
  • Brandishing his cudgel, he locks the two children into a room. When he comes back and demands to know where their father's room is, Anand quickly points to his own room instead — to buy them time to think.
  • Suddenly there is a crash and a loud scream, then muffled thumps, an eerie whine and a low humming sound. 'My time machine, he's started it!' Anand gasps.
  • There is another fainter howl and a great deal of clattering. The children shout for all they are worth. Neighbours — Mrs. Sharma, her husband and Dr. Mohan — come running and unlock the door.
  • Everyone enters the room cautiously and turns on the lights. The time machine is still humming softly — but the thief is nowhere to be seen.
  • There is only one way out of the house, and the neighbours came in the same way, so nobody could have missed him. Near the panel of switches lies the thief's green scarf.

Who's whoपात्र परिचय

AnitaFourteen, the narrator. Practical and sceptical — she helps her brother but warns him every time.
AnandThirteen. Believes he is a scientist, loves the word 'blueprint', and never finishes an invention that works.
PapaOpens doors softly — which is exactly why the burglar alarm soaks him.
MaCalm and soothing during Papa's anger, but guards her oven and mixer from Anand.
The thiefThe colony sweeper. He knew when each house was empty — and then he disappeared.

Main ideas

  • Curiosity and experimenting matter, even when the experiments fail. Anand keeps building.
  • Humour comes from things going wrong in a very ordinary family.
  • Quick thinking under pressure — Anand's lie about the room buys them the time they need.
  • The ending is deliberately open. The green scarf is the only clue, and the reader decides what happened.

The clue at the end

  • Near the panel of switches lay the green scarf — the thief's. The story never tells you where he went.
  • Anand's logic was clever but wrong: he assumed only thieves open doors gently. Papa did too.

Paper Boats

Poem · Rabindranath Tagore

Boats on the running stream — the poem's whole world.
Boats on the running stream — the poem's whole world.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

A child floats paper boats down a stream with his name on them, hoping a stranger far away will find them.

Chapter summary

  • Day by day the poet floats his paper boats, one by one, down the running stream.
  • In big black letters he writes his name on them, and the name of the village where he lives.
  • He hopes that someone in some strange land will find them and know who he is.
  • He loads his little boats with shiuli flowers from his garden, hoping these blooms of the dawn will be carried safely to land in the night.
  • He launches the boats and looks up into the sky, where he sees the little clouds setting their white bulging sails.
  • He wonders what playmate of his in the sky sends those clouds down the air to race with his boats.
  • When night comes he buries his face in his arms and dreams that his paper boats float on and on under the midnight stars.
  • In his dream the fairies of sleep are sailing in those boats, and their cargo is baskets full of dreams.

The gentle, dreaming world the poem lives in.

How the poem is written

  • Free verse — the poem has no fixed rhyme scheme or metre. It reads like a child speaking.
  • Imagery — shiuli flowers, white bulging sails, midnight stars. You can see the whole scene.
  • Personification — the clouds set sails and race the boats; the fairies of sleep sail in them.
  • Metaphor — the clouds are boats in the sky, matching the paper boats in the stream.
  • Repetition — 'day by day' and 'on and on' stretch out the sense of passing time.
  • Symbolism — the boats carry the child's name, his hopes and his dreams out into the unknown world.
  • पुनरावृत्ति — 'day by day' और 'on and on' समय के बीतने का एहसास बढ़ा देते हैं।

Main ideas

  • A child's imagination turns an ordinary stream into a route to the whole world.
  • The wish to be known — he writes his name because he wants a stranger to know he exists.
  • Hope and patience — he sends boats day after day without ever knowing whether they arrive.
  • Nature and dreams flow into each other; the sky mirrors the stream.

The last image

  • The boats end up carrying 'baskets full of dreams' — that is what the whole poem is really about.
  • Notice the pairing: paper boats below on the water, cloud boats above in the sky, both racing.

Postcards · Shaana's travels across India

Snowball fights at the Thajiwas glacier — Shaana's first postcard.
Snowball fights at the Thajiwas glacier — Shaana's first postcard.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

Shaana travels the length and breadth of India with her parents and writes postcards home to her class from each place.

Chapter summary

  • Shaana lives on Rameswaram island. She is travelling the length and breadth of the country with her parents, exploring landscapes, people and cultures, and sharing it all through postcards to her school friends.
  • 30 April — Thajiwas glacier, Kashmir, way up north. The glaciers are white and blue and they wear four layers of clothes. Appa and Amma love throwing snowballs at each other, but say there was much more snow last year. Her hands shake because she has no gloves.
  • 10 May — Himachal Pradesh, reached by another train. It is very quiet and they can see many mountains from their cabin. Colourful birds wake her with their chirping when the Sun rises in the east.
  • She thinks she hears bears growling in the west when it gets dark — but Amma says that is just Appa snoring. Shaana would love to meet a bear and give it a hug.
  • 17 May — Arunachal Pradesh. She learns that Himachal is in the north but Arunachal is all the way in the east; she had thought all the 'Pradesh' states sat next to each other.
  • They take two trains and a long drive, then walk through a forest to reach their treehouse. The forest is so thick that if you blink or stop to tie your shoelaces, you will get lost. She loves Arunachal best so far and hopes to see red pandas.
  • 24 May — the Sundarbans in West Bengal, to the south west. Amma and Appa take her onto the river in a small boat.
  • She learns that places like this are called wetlands, and that trees called mangroves can grow in seawater. Amma is sad about how much this place floods today. They see crocodiles and a lonely snake while boating.
  • 30 May — Gujarat. They travelled all the way from east to west, from West Bengal to Gujarat, and it took two and a half days.
  • She wonders why her parents brought her to the middle of the desert. It is hot and dry with sand everywhere — 'like a beach without the sea'. But she really loves the pretty, colourful clothes there. Amma gave her a surprise test and she passed with 88 per cent.
Chapter illustrationChapter illustrationChapter illustration

From the desert in the west to the wetlands in the east.

The route she travelled

  • North — Thajiwas glacier, Kashmir (30 April).
  • North — Himachal Pradesh (10 May).
  • East — Arunachal Pradesh (17 May).
  • South west — the Sundarbans, West Bengal (24 May).
  • West — the Gujarat desert (30 May).

Main ideas

  • India's enormous diversity — snow, thick forest, wetland and desert within a few weeks of travel.
  • Learning geography by living it — Shaana works out directions by actually crossing the country.
  • Quiet environmental awareness — less snow than last year, and a Sundarbans that floods more than it used to.
  • A child's honest voice — she misses her friends, enjoys the clothes, and reports her test marks.

The direction trick

  • Shaana's own confusion is the best memory aid: Himachal is in the north, Arunachal is in the east. Same word 'Pradesh', opposite ends of the country.
  • The Sun rises in the east — that is how the birds wake her, and how she keeps track of directions.
