Story · Hugh Lofting

Doctor Dolittle in his kitchen, with Polynesia the parrot listening from the window.
Doctor Dolittle in his kitchen, with Polynesia the parrot listening from the window.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

A people's doctor becomes an animal doctor after his parrot teaches him that animals have a language of their own.

Chapter summary

  • Doctor John Dolittle is sitting in his kitchen talking to the Cat's-food-Man, who has come with a stomach-ache.
  • The Cat's-food-Man suggests he stop being a people's doctor and become an animal doctor — he knows far more about animals than the local vets. His book about cats was wonderful.
  • Polynesia the parrot, sitting in the window singing a sailor song, stops to listen. After the visitor leaves she agrees: 'That man's got sense. Be an animal doctor.'
  • She then reveals the secret — animals can talk. Parrots speak two languages: people's language and bird language. 'Ka-ka oi-ee, fee-fee?' means 'Is the porridge hot yet?'
  • Excited, the Doctor rushes for a book and pencil and asks for the Birds' A.B.C. All afternoon, while it rains, Polynesia sits on the kitchen table giving him bird words to write down.
  • At teatime the dog Jip comes in. The Doctor thinks he is only scratching his ear, but Polynesia explains that animals don't always speak with their mouths — they talk with ears, feet, tails, with everything.
  • Jip twitching up one side of his nose means, 'Can't you see it has stopped raining?' Dogs nearly always use their noses to ask questions.
  • With the parrot's help the Doctor learns animal language so well that he can talk to animals himself and understand everything they say. He gives up being a people's doctor altogether.
  • News spreads fast. Old ladies bring pet pugs and poodles that have eaten too much cake, and farmers travel many miles with sick cows and sheep.
  • One day a plough horse is brought in, terribly glad to find a man who can speak horse language.
  • The horse complains that the vet over the hill has been treating him for six weeks with big pills, without ever looking at his eyes. What he actually needs is spectacles — he is going blind in one eye. He asks for a pair like the Doctor's, only green.
  • The Doctor gets him a fine big pair of green spectacles. The horse stops going blind and can see as well as ever — and soon farm animals wearing glasses become a common sight in the countryside round Puddleby.
Chapter illustrationChapter illustration

The Doctor writing down bird words, and the plough horse who only wanted spectacles.

Who's whoपात्र परिचय

Doctor John DolittleA kind, curious doctor. Knows more about animals than any vet, and is humble enough to be taught by a parrot.
PolynesiaThe parrot. Sharp, a little bossy, speaks two languages, and becomes the Doctor's teacher.
The Cat's-food-ManA neighbour with a stomach-ache. He plants the idea that starts the whole story.
JipThe Doctor's dog. Talks by twitching his nose — dogs ask questions with their noses.
The plough horseGoing blind in one eye. He did not need pills — he needed spectacles, and nobody had asked him.

Main ideas

  • Listening matters more than talking. The vet failed because he never asked the horse what was wrong.
  • Animals communicate all the time — with ears, feet, tails and body language, not only with sounds.
  • Being willing to learn from anyone, even a parrot, is what makes the Doctor good at his work.
  • Gentle humour — a horse asking for green spectacles is funny, but it also makes a serious point about being heard.

  • 'What I need is spectacles.' The horse had been given pills for six weeks because nobody could understand him.
  • Polynesia's key line: 'Animals don't always speak with their mouths.'

A Funny Manएक अजीब आदमी

Poem · Natalie Joan

Everything about this man is upside down — including the way he goes home.
Everything about this man is upside down — including the way he goes home.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

A nonsense poem. A stranger does everything the wrong way round, and the poet plays along with his silliness.

Chapter summary

  • One day a funny kind of man comes walking down the street.
  • He wears a shoe upon his head and hats upon his feet.
  • He raises the shoe — the way a gentleman raises his hat — and smiles. His manners are polite, but the poet has never seen 'such a funny sounding sight'.
  • He offers to present 'Your Highness' with a rose — and then takes out a currant bun and holds it to her nose.
  • The poet staggers back against the wall and answers that she never saw a rose with 'such a funny looking smell'.
  • He then begins to sing a song and sits down on the ground — 'such a funny feeling sound' as you never heard in all your life.
  • The poet finally asks, 'My friend, why do you wear two hats upon your feet?'
  • He gives no answer. He simply turns the other way about and hops home on his head.

The promised rose — and the kind of street scene where such a man might appear.

How the poem is written

  • Nonsense verse — the poem is meant to be silly and fun, not to make logical sense.
  • Mixed-up senses — 'sounding sight', 'looking smell', 'feeling sound'. Each phrase describes one sense using another. This is the poem's main joke.
  • Rhyme scheme — ABCB in each stanza (head / feet rhymes with street).
  • Alliteration — 'sounding sight', 'hopped home'.
  • Inversion — 'But never had I seen before' changes the normal word order to keep the rhythm.
  • Repetition — the word 'funny' appears in almost every stanza and sets the tone.
  • Dialogue — the poem is written as an exchange between the man and the poet.
  • व्युत्क्रम — 'But never had I seen before' में लय बनाए रखने के लिए सामान्य शब्द-क्रम बदला गया है।

Main ideas

  • Pure fun — humour created by turning ordinary things upside down.
  • Wordplay can be as enjoyable as story. The poem's pleasure is in its sounds and phrases.
  • Politeness and absurdity together — the man is perfectly well-mannered while doing everything wrong.

What makes it funny

  • Three impossible phrases carry the whole joke: a sight that sounds, a smell that looks, a sound that feels.
  • The poem never explains the man. He simply hops home on his head — and that is the point.

Mrs. Shaw coaches Mary on exactly what to say before the guests arrive.
Mrs. Shaw coaches Mary on exactly what to say before the guests arrive.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

A humorous play. A mother teaches her daughter how to talk to guests — and the daughter insults every one of them by accident.

Chapter summary

  • Scene I — Mrs. Shaw is tidying the room before two guests arrive, and tells Mary to put her coat away in her own bedroom.
  • She explains who is coming: Mrs. Harding, the wife of the wealthy Mr. Harding who has just bought a big house in Lanfield, and Mrs. Lee, Mr. Harding's sister.
  • Mrs. Shaw wants Mary to go out for a walk, fearing she may not say the right thing. Mary insists she can talk very well and asks to stay.
  • Her mother gives her the rules: be kind, say things that please people, laugh a lot, and if everyone stops talking, say something to start them again.
  • One more rule: when the guests get up to leave, don't look glad. Look sorry and say, 'Must you go? Can't you stay?' Mary repeats the line to memorise it.
  • Scene II — Mary criticises a man who travels to London by train daily and reads two newspapers, saying he lives in trains and that bankers can't think. Mrs. Lee replies that her brother is exactly such a banker.
  • Mary then laughs at Mrs. Best for going out in a blue dress with a red coat over it. Mrs. Harding says she has a blue dress and often wears her red coat with it.
  • Mary criticises Mrs. Cotter for staying in bed in the morning and always calling the doctor. Mrs. Harding says she stays in bed in the morning herself; Mrs. Lee says she often goes to the doctor.
  • Mary calls Mrs. Grantley too talkative and says talkative women aren't interesting. Mrs. Lee replies that her own mother is a very talkative woman.
  • Looking out of the window, Mary complains about a dirty dog that is always near their house and asks who would want a dog. Mrs. Harding looks out and says, 'That's Towzer. It's our dog.'
  • Still looking out, Mary criticises Mr. Pomeroy for riding a horse and practising shooting every day. Mrs. Lee says her brother rides and shoots, and sold his London house to move here for exactly that.
  • The guests decide it is getting late and rise to leave. Mrs. Shaw politely asks them to stay a little longer.
  • Mary, still unable to say the right thing even now, blurts out: 'Oh, must you stay? Can't you go?'

The drawing room where every polite remark goes wrong, and the window Mary keeps looking out of.

Who's whoपात्र परिचय

Mary ShawA young girl, sure she can talk well. Speaks before she thinks, and gets every remark wrong.
Mrs. ShawMary's mother. Wants to make friends in Lanfield, and coaches Mary carefully — in vain.
Mrs. HardingWife of the wealthy Mr. Harding. Owner of the blue dress, the red coat — and Towzer the dog.
Mrs. LeeMr. Harding's married sister. Her brother turns out to be the banker, the rider and the marksman Mary mocks.

Main ideas

  • Think before you speak — every one of Mary's careless remarks lands on someone present.
  • Knowing a rule is not the same as being able to use it. Mary memorised the line but could not apply it.
  • Humour built on repetition — the same mistake happens six times, and each time the audience sees it coming before Mary does.
  • Judging others quickly is risky; you rarely know who is listening.

  • Count the blunders: the banker, the blue dress, staying in bed, the doctor, the talkative woman, the dog, the horse rider. Six guests, one long disaster.
