The Day the River Spoke

Story · Kamala Nair

Jahnavi by the river, where a kingfisher and a green lizard keep her company.
Jahnavi by the river, where a kingfisher and a green lizard keep her company.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

A young village girl longs to go to school. When she cries by the river one morning, the river itself answers her.

Chapter summary

  • Jahnavi, nearly ten, lives in a coastal village. She sits crying by the river because her family will not send her to school.
  • A sleepy, murmuring voice asks what the matter is. She looks around — no one is there. It is the River itself speaking.
  • She tells the River that her brother Ettan (Gopi) and Meena go to school, but she is always told 'maybe next year' and left to mind her younger brothers, Ramu and little Appu.
  • Jahnavi is full of questions — why spiders are yellow in yellow flowers, why bamboo trees rustle, why the moon always comes from behind the hills, why baby fish in the field water turn into frogs.
  • The River tells her that little girls can do as much as little boys — they swim just as fast. Its advice is simple: slip into the school one morning, sit and listen, and maybe the teacher will let you stay. 'It's up to you.'
  • The River also tempts her with the world outside — big ships with lights that shine all night, which Chandu could one day take her to see.
  • Next day Jahnavi reaches school panting, with Appu asleep on her shoulder. She creeps nearer and nearer until she is squatting in the back row on the earthen floor.
  • The teacher notices the new girl, learns she is Gopi's sister, and promises: 'If you really want to come to my school, we'll talk to your father. We'll find a way.'
  • The teacher visits the house that evening. Her mother — who was refused school by her own mother — says girls should learn as much as they want, and is glad the teacher came.
  • Jahnavi runs back to the River: 'I was scared, but I did it!' She decides that when she grows up she will become a teacher and go house to house calling every girl in the village to school.

Who's whoपात्र परिचय

JahnaviNearly ten. Curious, full of 'whys', shy at first but brave enough to walk into a classroom uninvited.
The RiverSpeaks in a sleepy, murmuring voice. A friend and guide — it gives courage, not solutions.
MotherWas herself refused school as a child. Later says girls should learn as much as they want.
The TeacherNotices the girl at the back, listens to her, and walks to her home to convince her father.
Ettan (Gopi)Jahnavi's elder brother, already in school. 'Ettan' means elder brother.

Main ideas

  • Every girl has the right to learn — and the first step is often the hardest one.
  • Curiosity is the real beginning of education. Jahnavi wants school because she has questions.
  • Nature can be a companion and teacher. The River listens, encourages, and pushes her to act.
  • One girl's education can change a whole village — she plans to teach others in turn.

Remember this line

  • 'Remember — it's up to you!' The River never solves Jahnavi's problem. It only gives her the courage to take the first step herself.
  • Notice the change: she goes to the river crying at the start, and comes back saying 'I did it!' at the end.

Poem · Eliza Cook

King Bruce of Scotland, sad and ready to give up.
King Bruce of Scotland, sad and ready to give up.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

A narrative poem: a defeated king watches a spider climb, fall, and climb again — and finds his own courage.

Chapter summary

  • King Bruce of Scotland flings himself down in a lonely mood. Though he is a monarch and wears a crown, his heart is sinking.
  • He had been trying to do a great deed to make his people glad. He tried and tried, but could not succeed, and became quite sad.
  • In low despair he decides, 'I'll give it all up.'
  • Just at that moment a spider drops down on a fine silken thread. The king stops thinking and watches what it will do.
  • It is a long way up to the ceiling dome. The spider clings and crawls straight up with strong endeavour — but slips down with a slippery sprawl, as near the ground as ever.
  • Up it runs again, without a second's rest and without the least complaint. It falls still lower and lies there dizzy and faint — then its head grows steady and it goes again.
  • Up and down, now fast, now slow — nine brave attempts are counted.
  • The king mocks it: surely that 'foolish thing' will strive no more, since it toils so hard and tumbles every time.
  • But up it goes once more. Steadily, inch by inch, higher and higher — and with a bold little run at the very last pinch it reaches its native cot.
  • 'Bravo, bravo!' cries the King. 'All honour to those who try. The spider up there defied despair; he conquered, and why shouldn't I?'
  • Bruce braces his mind, tries once more as he tried before — and that time he does not fail.

How the poem is written

  • Narrative style — the poem tells a complete story with a character, a problem and an ending.
  • Rhyme scheme — ABAB in each stanza (down / think / crown / sink).
  • Alliteration — 'silken, filmy'; 'slippery sprawl'; 'steadily, steadily'.
  • Repetition — 'tried and tried', 'up, up', 'steadily, steadily' show effort repeated over time.
  • Personification — the spider is called 'he', is 'brave' and 'defied despair', like a person.
  • अनुप्रास — 'silken, filmy'; 'slippery sprawl'; 'steadily, steadily'।
  • पुनरावृत्ति — 'tried and tried', 'up, up', 'steadily, steadily' बार-बार की गई मेहनत दिखाते हैं।

Main ideas

  • Perseverance — failure is only final when you stop trying.
  • Inspiration can come from the smallest creature; the king learns from a spider.
  • Effort deserves honour, whether or not it succeeds the first time.

The one number to remember

  • Nine falls, and success on the tenth try. The king's own words say it best: 'All honour to those who try.'
  • The turning point of the poem is not the spider's success — it is the king asking, 'He conquered, and why shouldn't I?'

Three Days to Seeदेखने के लिए तीन दिन

Non-fiction · Helen Keller

Helen Keller found hundreds of things to interest her through touch alone.
Helen Keller found hundreds of things to interest her through touch alone.

What the chapter is aboutपाठ किस बारे में है

Helen Keller, who could neither see nor hear, imagines what she would look at if she were given sight for just three days.

Chapter summary

  • Helen Keller says that she, who cannot see, finds hundreds of things to interest her through mere touch.
  • She feels the delicate symmetry of a leaf, the smooth skin of a silver birch, the rough shaggy bark of a pine, and in spring searches the branches for the first bud.
  • Sometimes she is fortunate enough to place her hand on a small tree and feel the happy quiver of a bird in full song.
  • If touch alone gives so much pleasure, she thinks, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight. So she imagines three days of seeing, divided into three parts.
  • Day one — she would look at the people whose kindness and companionship made her life worth living. She knows her friends only from the feel of their faces; she has never seen into a friend's heart through 'that window of the soul', the eye.
  • Day two — she would rise with the dawn to see the thrilling miracle of night turning into day, and behold the magnificent panorama of light.
  • That day she would go to the museums, to see the condensed history of the earth — animals and races of men in their native environment, and the gigantic carcasses of dinosaurs and mastodons.
  • Day three — she would spend in the workaday world, among the haunts of men. She would stand at a busy corner simply looking at people, trying to understand their daily lives.
  • 'I see smiles, and I am happy. I see serious determination, and I am proud. I see suffering, and I am compassionate.'
  • At midnight, permanent night would close in again. Only when darkness returned would she realise how much she had left unseen.
  • Her advice to those who can see: use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be stricken blind — and apply the same method to every other sense.
Chapter illustrationChapter illustration

Dawn and the natural world she longed to see with her own eyes.

How the three days are divided

  • Day 1 — People: the friends whose kindness made her life worth living.
  • Day 2 — The world, past and present: dawn, then the museums.
  • Day 3 — Everyday life: the city, the busy corner, ordinary people at work.

Main ideas

  • Gratitude — we ignore what we have; those without it notice everything.
  • Beauty is in ordinary things — a leaf, a bud, bark, a bird's song, a stranger's smile.
  • A disability need not limit joy or curiosity; Helen Keller's world is rich through touch.
  • Live each day fully — make the most of every sense.
