Exploring Society: India and Beyond | Grade 8 Part 2

The true source of rights is duty.
— Mahatma Gandhi

Who Is a Citizen?

📌 Citizen =

Someone who legally belongs to a country and is a member of its political community. In a democracy, citizenship gives rights (voting, free speech, living safely) AND responsibilities (duties — obeying law, paying taxes, respecting others).

📋 Legal Identity

Formally connects people to their country. Governed by Citizenship Act 1955 + Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019. Not every resident is a citizen — you can reside without being a citizen!

🌍 Social Responsibility

Creates sense of belonging. United through shared values, rights & duties. Citizenship = active participation, not just a card!

💡
Story of Good Citizenship: Sonali & Harshada saw classmate Kruti being teased for her accent. They stood up for her AND invited her to join their badminton team. That's what real citizenship looks like — standing up AND including others! 🏸

Fundamental Rights

Fundamental Rights India Constitution
⚖️ 6 Categories of Fundamental Rights
📋 Right to Equality (Art 14–18)
Equal before law; no discrimination by religion/race/caste/gender; end untouchability
🗣️ Right to Freedom (Art 19–22)
Free speech, movement, assembly, profession; personal liberty
🚫 Right Against Exploitation (Art 23–24)
No forced labour; no child labour in hazardous occupations
🙏 Right to Religion (Art 25–28)
Freedom of conscience; practice any religion; manage religious affairs
📚 Cultural & Educational Rights (Art 29–30)
Minorities can preserve language, culture, run educational institutions
⚖️ Right to Constitutional Remedies (Art 32)
Approach courts if rights violated; "heart of the Constitution" — Ambedkar
⚖️ Equality vs Equity

Equality = everyone gets exactly the SAME. Equity = everyone gets what they NEED (accounts for existing disadvantages). Example: Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign gives extra support to girls' education — that's equity, not inequality!

Fundamental Duties

📋 11 Fundamental Duties (Article 51A)
  • Abide by the Constitution and respect national flag & anthem
  • Cherish & follow noble ideals of freedom struggle
  • Uphold & protect sovereignty, unity & integrity of India
  • Defend the country and render national service when called upon
  • Promote harmony and common brotherhood
  • Preserve rich heritage of composite culture
  • Protect natural environment (forests, rivers, wildlife)
  • Develop scientific temper, humanism, spirit of inquiry
  • Safeguard public property; abjure violence
  • Strive towards excellence in individual & collective activity
  • Provide opportunities for education to children (6–14 years)
💡
Rights & Duties — Two Sides of a Coin
Rights and duties are inseparable. My right to free speech creates your duty to let me speak. My duty to keep the environment clean protects your right to clean air. Gandhi said: "The true source of rights is duty."

Discrimination & Inclusion

⚡ What is Discrimination?

Discrimination = unfair treatment based on identity — caste, religion, gender, language, ethnicity, disability. Article 15 & 17 of Constitution specifically prohibit discrimination and untouchability.

❌ Examples of Discrimination
  • Meena not allowed in debate because "girls shouldn't speak on stage"
  • Ravi (vendor's son) not allowed in library
  • Children made to work instead of going to school
  • Gaganjit (wheelchair user) can't enter hall — no ramp
✅ What Inclusion Looks Like
  • Ramps built for Gaganjit
  • Meena joined the debate
  • Children enrolled in school
  • Ravi entered the library
  • All on stage together at ceremony!

Marginalised Groups & Active Citizenship

💪 Government Initiatives for Inclusion
  • Beti Bachao Beti Padhao — girls' education & safety
  • Differently-abled friendly policies — ramps, braille, sign language
  • Reservations — SC/ST/OBC quotas in education & government jobs (equity measure)
  • RTI Act — Right to Information; citizens can demand accountability from government
  • MNREGA — guaranteed employment for rural poor
🌟 What Active Citizenship Looks Like
  • Voting and participating in democratic processes
  • Paying taxes honestly — funds public services
  • Standing up against injustice (like Sonali & Harshada)
  • Protecting the environment — our fundamental duty
  • Helping others — volunteering, community service
  • Respecting ALL citizens regardless of differences
