Exponents, powers, scientific notation aur exponential growth — ek hi jagah!

📄

1. Experiencing Exponential Growth

Paper folding comic strip showing Estu, Roxie and owl discussing folding paper to reach moon @edugrown

Paper folding — 46 baar fold karo, thickness Moon tak pahunch jaayegi!

Ek paper ki starting thickness = 0.001 cm

Har fold ke baad thickness double ho jaati hai → yeh hai Exponential Growth (Multiplicative Growth)

  • 10 folds → thickness ≈ 1 cm (ek inch se thoda zyada)
  • 17 folds → thickness ≈ 131 cm (4 feet!)
  • 20 folds → thickness ≈ 10.4 metres
  • 26 folds → thickness ≈ 670 m (Burj Khalifa ≈ 830 m)
  • 30 folds → thickness ≈ 10.7 km (plane ki height!)
  • 46 folds → thickness > 7,00,000 km → Moon tak! 🌕
Burj Khalifa illustration @edugrown
Every 10 folds → thickness increases by exactly 1024 times (= 2¹⁰). Yahi exponential growth ki power hai!

📝

2. Exponential Notation

💡 Definition: Exponent / Power

Jab ek number n ko khud se a baar multiply karo, toh result likhte hain nᵃ

n = base,    a = exponent / power

nᵃ = n × n × n × ... × n   (a times)

📐 Reading Exponents
5⁴ = 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 = 625
Read as: "5 raised to power 4" or "5 to the 4th"
n² = "n squared"  |  n³ = "n cubed"
Paper folding: 2¹⁰ = 1024  |  2⁴⁶ = thickness to Moon!

🧮 Examples of Exponential Notation

  • 4³ = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64   (positive base → positive result)
  • (−4)³ = (−4) × (−4) × (−4) = −64   (negative base, odd power → negative)
  • (−4)⁴ = (−4) × (−4) × (−4) × (−4) = +256   (even power → always positive)
  • a³b² = a × a × a × b × b   (combined bases)
  • 32400 = 2⁴ × 5² × 3⁴   (prime factorisation in exponential form)
⚠️
Don't Confuse!
4 + 4 + 4 = 3 × 4 = 12 (addition/multiplication)
4 × 4 × 4 = 4³ = 64 (exponentiation)
Repetitive addition ≠ Repeated multiplication!
King with 3 daughters — tree diagram showing exponential growth of diamonds @edugrown

3 daughters → 3 baskets → 3 keys → 3⁴ rooms → 3⁷ diamonds! Yeh hai exponential multiplication.

⚖️

3. Laws of Exponents

Yeh 6 laws sabse important hain — exam mein zaroor aate hain! 📌

Law 1 — Multiplication
nᵃ × nᵇ = nᵃ⁺ᵇ
Same base → powers add karo
Example: 3⁴ × 3³ = 3⁷
Law 2 — Power of Power
(nᵃ)ᵇ = nᵃˣᵇ
Powers multiply karo
Example: (2³)⁴ = 2¹²
Law 3 — Division
nᵃ ÷ nᵇ = nᵃ⁻ᵇ
Same base → powers subtract karo (n ≠ 0, a > b)
Example: 5⁷ ÷ 5⁴ = 5³
Law 4 — Product Rule
mᵃ × nᵃ = (mn)ᵃ
Same power → bases multiply
Example: 3⁴ × 2⁴ = 6⁴
Law 5 — Quotient Rule
mᵃ ÷ nᵃ = (m/n)ᵃ
Same power → bases divide (n ≠ 0)
Example: 10⁴ ÷ 5⁴ = 2⁴
Law 6 — Zero Power
n⁰ = 1
Any non-zero base raised to 0 = 1
Example: 7⁰ = 1, 100⁰ = 1
Magical pond with lotuses doubling every day @edugrown

🪷 Magical Pond — Laws in Action

Lotus pond full on day 30 → half full on day 29
Using Law 1: Fully covered = 2³⁰, Half covered = 2²⁹
Using Laws 3 & 4: 2⁴ × 3⁴ = (2×3)⁴ = 6⁴

💡 Mini Example — All Laws Together
nᵃ × nᵇ = nᵃ⁺ᵇ   →   2³ × 2⁵ = 2⁸
(nᵃ)ᵇ = nᵃˣᵇ   →   (3²)⁴ = 3⁸
nᵃ ÷ nᵇ = nᵃ⁻ᵇ   →   5⁷ ÷ 5³ = 5⁴
mᵃ × nᵃ = (mn)ᵃ   →   2⁵ × 5⁵ = 10⁵ = 100000

0⁻

4. Zero & Negative Exponents

💡 Zero Exponent

n⁰ = 1 for any n ≠ 0

Proof: xᵃ ÷ xᵃ = xᵃ⁻ᵃ = x⁰   aur   xᵃ ÷ xᵃ = 1   →   x⁰ = 1

Why n ≠ 0? Because 0⁰ = 0/0 which is undefined!

📐 Negative Exponent
n⁻ᵃ = 1/nᵃ   (where n ≠ 0)
2⁻¹ = 1/2  |  2⁻³ = 1/8  |  10⁻³ = 1/1000
Negative power = reciprocal of the positive power

📉 Negative Powers — Sign Rules

  • (−1)⁵ = −1   (odd power → negative)
  • (−1)⁵⁶ = +1   (even power → always positive)
  • (−2)⁴ = 16 ✅   (even power of negative → positive)
  • (−2)³ = −8   (odd power of negative → negative)
Negative base rule: Even power → always positive ✅ | Odd power → always negative ❌

Power Line of 4 🔢

4⁻² = 1/16 4⁻¹ = 1/4 4⁰ = 1 4¹ = 4 4² = 16 4³ = 64 4⁴ = 256

5. Scientific Notation (Standard Form)

🔬 Scientific Notation / Standard Form
x × 10ʸ

Jahan: 1 ≤ x < 10 (coefficient)   aur   y = any integer (exponent)

The exponent y is more important than coefficient x — it tells you the magnitude (size) of the number.

✍️ Converting to Scientific Notation

  • 5900 = 5.9 × 10³
  • 20800 = 2.08 × 10⁴
  • 80,00,000 = 8 × 10⁶
  • 0.001 = 1 × 10⁻³

📊 Expanded Form using Powers of 10

47561 = (4 × 10⁴) + (7 × 10³) + (5 × 10²) + (6 × 10¹) + (1 × 10⁰)

561.903 = (5 × 10²) + (6 × 10¹) + (1 × 10⁰) + (9 × 10⁻¹) + (0 × 10⁻²) + (3 × 10⁻³)

Number line showing Sun to Saturn distance in scientific notation @edugrown

Sun–Earth distance = 1.496 × 10¹¹ m  |  Sun–Saturn = 1.4335 × 10¹² m

⚠️
Exam Tip: Scientific notation mein x hamesha 1 se 10 ke beech (including 1, excluding 10) hona chahiye. 0.5 × 10³ is NOT correct; write as 5 × 10².
5-digit lock combination showing 10⁵ passwords @edugrown
🔐 Combinations — Powers of 10

2-digit lock: 10 × 10 = 10² = 100 passwords
3-digit lock: 10³ = 1000 passwords
5-digit lock: 10⁵ = 1,00,000 passwords
n-digit lock: 10ⁿ passwords
