The human eye can only see objects above a certain size โ tiny things remained unknown for centuries. Long ago, people discovered that a curved piece of glass could make small objects appear larger.
- Microscope's invention opened a fascinating hidden world of tiny living creatures!
- 1665 โ Robert Hooke published Micrographia. He observed cork under a microscope and saw honeycomb-like spaces
- Hooke named each small space a "Cell" โ the first ever use of this word in science!
- 1660s โ Antonie van Leeuwenhoek made better lenses and was the first to clearly see bacteria and blood cells
- Leeuwenhoek is called the Father of Microbiology
- Hooke's microscope magnified objects 200โ300 times

Every cell has 3 main parts. Some cells also have one extra layer:
The outermost layer that separates the cell from others. It is porous โ allows essential materials to enter and waste to exit. Encloses both cytoplasm and nucleus.
The jelly-like fluid filling the space between the cell membrane and nucleus. Contains carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and mineral salts. Most life processes take place in the cytoplasm!
A round structure in the middle, covered by a thin membrane. Regulates all activities within the cell and controls cell growth. Think of it as the cell's "brain"!
An extra outer layer beyond the cell membrane. Provides rigidity and strength to plant cells โ this is why plants stand firm and upright.

- Muscle Cell: Spindle-shaped โ can contract and relax, creates wave motion in the food pipe
- Nerve Cell (Neuron): Very long with many branches โ carries messages quickly to different body parts
- Cheek Cell: Thin and flat โ forms a protective lining on the inner surface of the mouth

- Microbes are found everywhere โ water, soil, air, and even inside our bodies!
- Unicellular: Made of just one cell โ e.g., Bacteria, Amoeba

- Found even in extreme conditions โ hot water springs and snowy zones!
- Some microbes are helpful (digestion, medicines), others are harmful (diseases)

Have you noticed cotton-like growth on rotting fruits? That is microbes at work! They grow on food left outside โ causing it to rot and decompose.
- Manure forms at optimal temperature and moisture
- Some bacteria also produce biogas (COโ + methane) โ used as fuel!
Microbes work in our kitchens too โ bread stays soft, curd becomes thick, and idlis turn fluffy all because of microbes!

- Yeast (Fungi): Respires in warm conditions โ releases COโ โ creates bubbles in dough โ bread becomes soft and fluffy! Also produces a small amount of alcohol (gives different smell).
- Lactobacillus (Bacteria): Feeds on lactose (sugar) in milk โ produces lactic acid โ milk curdles โ Curd forms! Grows faster in warm milk.
- Fermentation: Lactobacillus and yeast ferment idli and dosa batter โ giving the characteristic puffing and sour taste
- Why don't pickles/preserves rot? High concentration of salt or sugar prevents microbes from growing โ acting as a natural preservative!
Microalgae are microscopic plant-like organisms โ found in water, soil, air and even on tree bark! They make their own food using sunlight.
- Spirulina, Chlorella, Diatoms โ used as health supplements and medicines
- Help clean water bodies
- Used to produce biofuel
- Spirulina is a superfood โ over 60% protein, rich in Vitamin Bโโ
- Pollution and climate change are threatening microalgal diversity โ conservation is essential!
